I was thinking exactly the same thing. And any 12 year old would remember to eat.
NPH has a slower activation graph and peeks around the 5 hour mark. Many parents mix it with Rapid in the morning to avoid having to coordinate a noon shot. The following graph shows the differences.
We definately are doing better on the pump than MDI. DS was like your son - he would just eat without giving himself a shot. Now he will bolus - most of the time he underboluses but at least he gives himself *something* and now that he has the Dex I can catch it and correct before he gets too high.
