Had a flubbed shot this morning and that tell-tale smell, insulin all over. But the thing is, I know that smell, it smells like "hospital" to me, so I'm thinking it's not the insulin itself but whatever it is suspended in? Just curious, anyone know?

to me it smells like body odor or rotting dirty socks-I could always smell it when I was pregnant and had a sensitive nose.

Insulin smells like creosote on railroad ties to me. Weird I know, but everytime I smell it, it takes me back to my childhood. My grandmother used the railroad ties around her flower garden and I can still remember the smell.

Ethier that or kinda smells like bandaides to me.

I can't think of another smell like it.. But it TASTES like milk. It doesn't taste as bad as it smells. (For the record, I don't make a habit out of drinking insulin, I was just curious about it one day.)

Its Band-aid to me too. Hubby doesn't smell the band-aid smell that I do.

I love the smell of insulin, in my mind it smells like "HEALTH".

The phenol is probably what you smell, that smells like a "hospital".

    We have a winner.

Looks like bandaids used a phenol resin? And humalog suspends in phenol. And here's what wikipedia says in line #1 about phenol.

"Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is a toxic, white crystalline solid with a sweet tarry odor, commonly referred to as a "hospital smell"."

    That was fun, thanks, guys!

We just had this conversation at my sister's house. A few of my sisters said bandaids, and we all agreed that it smells like my dad used to when he came home from work (he is a dentist).

I've "read" it's made with the "E-Coli" bacteria, which is treated with tetricyclin(sp), maybe that's the smell?(how true this is, I'm not sure, but have read it at a few websites)

All of us here think it smells like Band-aids as well. It has it's own smell for sure.

DH says it smells like electronic parts, the board part with holes (a panel). Behind it's sealed with some metal:confused:

I never could quite describe the smell, except that it was a medical-type smell but BAND-AIDS really is a good description.

Like insilun! LOL I always thought of it as one of "those" smells, like tuna or coffee, that only smells like itself.

BTW, Novolog and Humalog smell different. I found out while helping my friend with her DDs pump. J uses Novo...and I know my friends DD uses Hum. They smelled different...but the same. If that makes sense. :)

Apidra also smells different than the others. My DD mentioned it the first time we tried it. I tried to recall what Lantus smelled like wondering if they are similar.
