My first grader had to make a "ME BAG" with items to share with the class. Among his baseball items and favorite legos, he decided at the last minute to take his diabetes book to share with the class. It was a total suprise to me - I didn't even know he had taken it, until I got this email from his First Grade Teacher (who is wonderful, by the way). I was so happy and teary. Here is her email: "I just wanted to send you a note to tell you how great Parker did with his Me Bag. He brought in the children's book about diabetes. He told the whole class he had Type 1 diabetes and then asked if I would read the book to the class. We read the book and then at the end one kid raised his hand and said "yeah, but Parker what exactly is diabetes" ? Parker stood up and said "Everyone has a pancreas, all of you do, and yours works, mine just doesn't work so I have to go to the nurse and she checks me, and I wear this pump and it checks me". He even ended it with saying "I am different then all of you because I have diabetes, but at the same time I am the same". I just wanted to write and let you know. I was blown away how he explained it to the rest of our class, and how mature and smart he is!" His dad and I are so proud of him. What a sweet boy!
