We are trying to get Cooper accepted into our local Protege trial. He has 2lbs to gain. The local coordinator has suggest we load up on "dense foods" and only suggested steak and pudding. I am not much of a nutritionist so not sure what qualifies as dense. All she said was food with little water content.

    Any ideas? thx

Lots of calories with little exercise is usually the way to gain weight. I do the opposite to lose it.

I don't know about "dense" foods but I know kids who've needed to gain weight and it was suggested they do things like add carnation instant milk to their milk or other foods (you might even find a higher calorie thing to add). Also drinking whole milk and whole fat cheeses and yogurt instead of the lower fat foods we adults try to eat. And giving them things like pediasure.

Is there a time frame they want him to gain it by? Ava was always on the skinny side. She eats lots of avocado and sunflower seed butter. And we put canola oil on her noodles.

Yeah, I was going to ask similar to Joy. Do they just need him to gain for a short while (just to weigh him in?) or keep it on???

they just need him to gain it to meet the initial weight requirement. If he loses it later that is okay. He has about 2wks to gain this weight.

I would focus on lots of things like nuts, avacadoes, and complex but low GI calorie dense carbs so you can balance his blood sugar more easily - so sweets baked with whole wheat and honey or maple syrup in place of sugar - that kind of thing.

    Good luck!

I have tried looking for this but can't seem to find it at Walmart. I have looked in teh breakfast aisle as well as in the pharmacy with the diet drinks. Any idea where else they might hide it???

We find Carnation instant breakfast with the cereal/oatmeal. The ensure drinks also have quite a bit of calories and carbs- they are a full meal in a drink- so if you add one as a snack it should bump up the daily calorie count.

Pedisure is in the baby isle at Wal-Mart with the baby formula's. Adult ensure is usually near the pharmacy. My hubby works at Wal-Mart:)

another thing to be especially watchful of is keep those BG low as possible--highs can cause them not to gain weight.

Frequent meals help too, according to our cde. We've had a tough time getting Sam to gain, but he has done quite well recently, but also grown up so bmi is the same.
