My doctor wrote a prescription/letter of medical necessity to Animas so my 16 year old could get the Vibe. We are two years into the Ping. Animas said that pediatric patients can't uograde to the Vibe. They can only get it when their four years are up and they are eligible for a new pump. Are you hearing anything different. Is there a way around this?
not sure, I wondered if this was because the low suspend is set at 55 and cannot be changed, at least that was what I was reading on a comparison chart.
I'm under the impression that they are not honoring the discounted upgrade for anyone under 18 under any circumstance but you can try to go through insurance to get it. Medtronic did initially state that they were not going to provide upgrades to kids when they came out with the 530g but they ended up doing so. Thus, I would be really surprised if this was an FDA issue. I think the problem is they have a severe shortage of vibe pumps so they are using the fact they didn't get pediatric approval to avoid needing to upgrade kids. Sorry, I know this isn't very helpful. I think it is important to remember that medtronic did honor their agreement with a letter of medical necessity. I have been trying to get a vibe pump since the day the approval was announced and I am no where near getting one. In my case at least, it is not an insurance issue but rather Animas just doesn't seem to have any availability of pumps if you are not a "famous" diabetes blogger. I'm most likely going to just wait for the tslim to be integrated and get that.
