    Hello New Jersey Advocates:

I'm sending this to pass along the good news that Governor Corzine signed the school diabetes care bill this afternoon. This bill will ensure that students can independently manage their diabetes with the permission of their parent and clinician, and that staff can be trained to administer glucagon for severe hypoglycemia in the event that a school nurse is not present to do so. The law becomes effective on January 29, 2010 (120 days from today's enactment). If you are interested in the text of the bill, it can be found at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bills/A0500/267_R1.PDF . Thank you for your assistance in getting this law passed!

If my being a displaced Jersey girl wasnt' reason enough, that news clinches it for me... there's no doubt in my mind where we'll be headed when we head back to the U.S. :D Whenever that will be.

Great news for NJ. The only opposition I can think of is that the teachers were worried about administering glucagon. I have a friend who teaches in NJ and she and the union were very concerned about it. But then I showed her the kit and told her they couldn't possibly overdose, (and the negatives of NOT giving the gluc) and she was much relieved. I believe all the teachers are going to be trained on it.

Gosh, I might have to move back to Jersey myself. :p
