My son has recently started CGM'ing. It was recommended that we use EMLA before insertion for pain. How long do you wait before insertion? We use Sure-T for the pump so we don't need anything to numb the area.

We covered it with Tegaderm and left it on at least an hour but less than 2 hours, then washed it off with soap and water so there was no sticky residue, then followed the procedures for insertion.

The package insert indictates that peak effectiveness is in the 1.5-2 hour margin. We leave the emla on for 1.5 hours and then when that is up, we put a little boo-boo bear ice pack ontop of the tegaderm and emla for 10-15 more minutes. We then take off the ice pack and remove the tegaderm and wipe off emla with a napkin. then we clense the skin real good with an alcohol pad to get the emla off completely. Finally, we insert the MM sensor. He feels nothing and he is a REAL scardy cat.

When doing a pump site change, I only keep the emla on for 45 to 60 min. However, I have found that the sensor requires longer to be good and numbed.

We do 20 minutes for a pump site (it's mostly psychological) and 45 minutes for a sensor site.

For a sensor we did 2 hours but we don't CGM anymore. For the pod, we numb 1 hour for stomach, and closer to 2 hours for butt and leg. Not as much fat there!

We do about 30 minutes on average for a pump site. Sometimes as short as 15 and other times as long as an hour. never more than an hour.
