I have written posts on this topic before, but it never hurts to revisit important topics.

Today is the 1 year anniversary of Chester Bennington, lead singer of the amazing band Linkin Park, taking his life. He had struggled with mental health issues, substance abuse and depression for most of his life. How does this relate to caregiver burnout? There may not be direct correlations, but I think that often times, the stress of the 24/7/365 care of a young person with Type 1 diabetes can cause feelings of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, etc. These feelings are often pushed aside and not dealt with.

Obviously, the person who actually HAS the illness may also experience these things as well. But I think caregivers, in particular, tend to try and just “soldier through” and are so focused on taking care of the person with the illness that they neglect their own mental health needs. I admit I did this for many years. This neglect led to other unhealthy behaviors, which only exacerbated the feelings that caused it in the first place. I am by no means blaming my choices on burnout, I should have addressed it in more constructive, healthy ways.

Anyway, remembering Chester on this day made me think about this topic and so I thought I would post some links in case anyone was interested. I know it seems like common sense, but if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to fully take care of those who need you the most.

And just for the heck of it, two awesome songs by Linkin Park:
