My DS can do sites completely on his own (he's 11) but I usually help, just to offer him support (and sometimes we're in a hurry).

As for if it's asking too much of her....I think that depends more on her than on anything else. On one hand, parents shouldn't push their kids to do things they aren't ready for, but on the other, some kids need a little more nudging than others to do things that are a little bit scary at first. Personally, I don't think someone who is 12 and has been pumping for a year is too young to change a site on their own(for the most part). Especially since you have time for her to be able to practice at home. We started having DS put in his own sites in the 'easy' spots, like tummy and legs. Now he does his own sites most places, except places that are hard to reach. But then, my DS is not your DD.

It's a whole year away. A lot of things can change in that time. When the time comes, you'll know what to do. Trust your gut, and your daughter, on this one. Ask her how she feels, whether she'd rather go to shots or learn to do her own insertion. I'm betting she's more able to take care of things than your life specialist gives her credit for. She might be a little nervous the first few times, but she'll get it. And you'll learn to trust her with it, also. If she's like me, she'll be a lot more confident in herself if she feels you trust in her ability to do it right.

    Good luck!

The thing is that there is no right age. Variables such as age of dx, age of pumping, squemishness, etc all play into it. Some 12 and newly dx is not the same as someone 12 and pumping for 6 yrs. Plus, if you hardly ever do it then suddenly have to do it on your own, you might be able to or you might be lost.

Go on youtube and watch ppl of all ages do site changes. there are toddlers dictating all the steps and there are young kids doing site changes for the first time or the hundreth time. they're fun to watch. have your daughter watch them and have her try one on you. Then just let her do them as she likes. Then tape the heck outta that site and pray. :D

Ava was 18 months at dx, but she puts in sets frequently. We use the rapid d steel set so it goes in like a thumb tack easy peasy. At twelve I would push it a bit so they can do pool parties and sleepovers without you,
