Smoothies/Milkshakes?

    Any good recipes for low carb (or at least reduced carb) smoothies or milkshakes?

    Any tips would be appreciated. :)

    I make smoothies for my kids.
    Here's a list of what I typically put in ours.

    Per smoothie:
    ~plain yogurt 3/4 cup (about 9 carbs)
    1 cup of fruit - usually:
    ~1/2 frozen banana (about 8 carbs) and 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (about 9 carbs)
    OR 1 cup frozen mixed berries (about 15 carbs)
    OR 1 cup frozen peach slices unsweetened (about 15 carbs)
    ~ almond milk to smooth out texture - about 1/2 a cup (about 2 carbs)
    ~ 1 tbsp protein powder (no carbs)
    ~ 1 tsp Flax seeds ground (about 0.5 net carbs) or wheat germ
    ~ 1 packet of stevia for sweetening if needed (0 carbs)
    ~ 1 tbsp flax seed oil or lemon flavoured fish oil (0 carbs)
    ~ splash of vanilla extract
    ~ probiotics, and other vitamins

    I play around with the fruit options depending on what we have. A typical smoothie works out to about 25 - 30 carbs and is about 1 and a half cups of liquid. I give my kids this with a piece of sprouted grain toast (8 carbs per slice) for a relatively low carb, low GI breakfast. If it is a busy day I will add more protein powder to up the protein content without adding carbs.

    I made this the other day for Sam:
    Cantaloupe Cooler
    1 cup cubed cantaloupe
    1 cup frozen unsweetened strawberries
    1 cup green grapes
    1/2 cup ice cubes
    Artificial sweetener equivilant to 4 teaspoons.

    3/4 cup=16 carbs

    *I used fresh strawberries, black grapes, and more ice, and it still tasted great. Just depends if you use artificial sweeteners with your family if you'll like it.

    1 c. plain yogurt
    1 c. frozen blueberries
    1 c. low carb OJ(Tropicana) or regular OJ depending on what we have
    1-2 packets of splenda

    whirl in the blender.

    I try to throw in some wheat germ or flax seed but my kids don't like the texture. I throw in 1/2 silken tofu when I have it, too. No one notices that at all.

    I will have to try some of these idea.
    Here is a question. I use yogurt or fat free sugar free ice cream and I blend it with fruit (frozen strawberries or cherries mostly) but it needs liquid. It really needs juice (orange juice) but even the lower carb version is still juice. Any ideas for liquid?

    Almond milk is very low carb (2 -5 carbs per cup depending on the brand) and gives you a nicer texture than water with the added benefit of protein and other nutritients.

    These taste as close to the real deal as I have ever ran across...and they are loaded with vitamins and minerals....


    1 Cup Hood Calorie Countdown milk *3-5g carbs depending on flavor*
    1 Scoop whey protein powder *3g carbs*
    1/2 cup frozen fruit *carbs depend on fruit you choose...1/2 banana 14 g carbs*
    1 Tbsp Splenda or 2-3 drops of stevia

    Mix in blender and enjoy. These are really creamy just like an ice cream shake. I love these with peaches, strawberries, pineapples, papayas, mangos..any fruit you can freeze. Shad loves them made with Hood Chocolate milk and 1/2 banana..which makes a great high protein snack coming in at 22 g carbs...or a great addition to an other wise low carb meal such as a large salad.

    any tips for blending? I can never seem the right texture... or my ice cubes turn into chunks instead of a nice slush... maybe its my blender?

    I use an immersion blender (all the ingredients go in a pitcher). Works best for smoothies.

    Whey Protein shake mix
    1 scoop of Almond butter or natural Peanut butter
    A couple dashes of cinnamon
    And a frozen banana


    Taste is sort of like a Reese cup, but the cinnamon gives a very nice taste and good for you also.

    Any fruit you want like bananas and strawberries blended with silken tofu and milk/soymilk/almond milk/rice milk. We do use a bit of sugar, but not very much.

    I made a new one this morning that got a thumbs UP (we do a lot of smoothies around here, rarely with a recipe, just throw in what we've got).

    Today's creation:

    greek yogurt (high protein/lower carb), this am it was vanilla
    milk
    frozen strawberries
    banana
    a packet of sugar free hot choco mix (there's a new 4 carb version I found)
    squirt of agave nectar (sometimes I just use stevia)
    little bit of flax (I add it often to stuff)

    Mix together then add ice and blend. For me the trick to good blending is a high quality blender or immersion blender, totally worth the money if you like smoothies. I use my immersion for all kinds of things, not only smoothies but refried beans, soups, hummus, etc.
