my ds takes synthroid - we tried generic but that didn't work as well for him. he has never had a problem with insulin resistance but then he was on synthroid before being diagnosed with Diabetes.

It is hard to say if the synthroid caused any side effects since he felt so rotten before taking them that once they started working he felt so much better.

When he was first diagnosed they did some XRays and MRI's - both his pituitary and thryoid came back mishapen and they thought he had tumors. Once the thyroid medicine kicked in (3 months) they re-did the MRI's and the glands were all back to normal. thank goodness....

    insulin resistance?

my dd's TSH was 69 at dx in August.

I dont know the answers to your Q's re surgery.

About insulin resistance....I am not sure what you mean? I dont want to answer the wrong Q. If you mean were you dc BG sugars screwy before hashimoto dx and you hope they will be better after taking synthroid, then in our case, YES. YDMV
we were on a bg rollercoaster, up a few days , down a few days, never any consistency despite our efforts at control. I'm sure the CDE thought we were the problem. Now, her numbers are DELICIOUS! They are sooo goood. They are usually in target range. and now, I can often see why they may be out of range. I am on cloud nine. I am giving the credit to the synthroid, but that is the only other real change. Except for one other, that I am homeschooling her this year, which if anxiety was the problem, then that would've been a factor.

havnt been checking in, hi friends-The question about the insulin resistance, meaning did you have any increased needs for more insulin once the zinthroid treatment started? i think i saw a post on that ill check out.

Thats great about her bs's getting better! Of course well hope for that, that does sometimes happen for no reason, so that would be a bonus surprise, shes not too bad now most of the time, wonder if the thyroid "acts up"

And here we go again....new ultrasound shows small growth. TSH has not changed much which means Thyroid Function as far as those #'s is ok. The radiologist who took the scan has suggested another biopsy, this led me to reach out to the thyroid specialist team at Childrens Hospital of Philly. We may have an appointment with a Ped Thyroid specialist the end of the month. About 2 hours away.

I'm sorry! As much as the Thryoidectomy stinks, it will probably eliminate alot of future worries and having to go through the constant sonograms and biopsys or worse, a positive biopsy result. I try to find the positive in everything.:cwds:

This is our fear as well. My daughter has 3 1 inch nodules on her thyroid. Thank goodness she had a negative biopsy but I worry all the time. She has to have another sonogram soon too to see if the synthroid reduced the nodules or has stopped others from forming.

Please keep us updated and your daughter will be in my prayers. :cwds:

    Thank You.
What helped us to really "see" what was happening inside Em's Thyroid, the Doc actually shoed us the Thyroid Picture on a special monitor. He showed us as compared to a healthy thyroid how dense and dark it was. :(

Up-date Emmy's Thyroidectomy over and done!!

The update for Emmy's Thyroidectomy: Went to see surgeon at CHOPS (Children's Hospital Of Philly)....His examination of all tests led him to decision to take out enlarged, nodule filled, thyroid, asap, also biopsy was "inconclusive".......

Surgery was scheduled for June 18. Visit Pre-Surgery went well, all questions answered, and a bonus: The anesthesiologist was TYPE-1!!! What a relief!!!!!

The surgery was over 3 hours!!!!! That was the hardest part!!!! The waiting!!!!......Em was allowed to wear her pump, she was checked throughout the surgery. (All blood sugars PERFFECT!!!!) The suggestion to let her eat whatever she wanted for dinner...and then a dish of ICE CREAM as her last meal at about 10:00 or so proved GREAT too!! Somthing about the Fat helpingh tp hold the blood sugars throughout the night and all through the am surgery!! (there were IV fluids of course)...but they said em did not need the glucose until many hours later.

The surgery was Fri am and we were home by Sat night!!!! There was pain and nausia from the meds. Not fun. I stayed over night with Em in a private room. It was as comfortable as could be!....The docs all thought we would stay until/sunday (fathers day) or even monday, it was a big surgery for Em, But her levels of Calcium, and blood sugars were fine, so we opted to do the painmanagement at home, and we survived!!!

Shes doing great!!! Looks and feels better than in a long time!!! Now to work on dosages of synthroid.....:p;)
