Okay. Need a little advise here. My mom was watching London for a little while I had to take care of something and she dosed him with the Lantus for supper instead of the humalog. He gets 5 units of Lantus in the morning now she gave another 1.5 units by mistake. Im thinking maybe just do a whole lot of checking and stick with the normal dose tommorow morning. I expect i will be chasing lows for the next 24 hrs. Any suggestions ?
First - I would call your endo about tomorrow's dose. Second - I would test and give a couple of free small snacks. Not to much - but some peanut butter, ice cream, really high fat stuff to help keep him steady. There is a recipe here for peanut butter cornstarch balls that really keep kids steady - let me see if I can find it!
Hmmm...can't find the peanut butter cornstarch recipe. I know it has been around for a while; hopefully someone else will remember it!
Here's an old post with cornstarch recipes Corny Cookies http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_08_2co.htm by Michelle Hansen, MS, RD, CDE These cookies contain uncooked cornstarch, which is absorbed slowly by the body. They might help prevent nighttime hypoglycemia. Ingredients 12 Tablespoons peanut butter (3/4 cup) 3 Tablespoons honey 1/4 cup cornstarch 2 cups cornflakes Instructions Stir together peanut butter, honey and cornstarch. Form into balls, about 1 Tablespoon in size, and roll in cruched cornflakes. Flatten balls with a tumbler and chill. Cornstarch is very slowly digested, helps keep the bgs up for a long time. Thank you - I was looking and looking! I know Rusty might not of used them - but these are such a great thing with stubborn lows!
Wondering how it all went? Didn't have any better advise than the good advise given, but watching to see how the night was.
Everything went fairly well. Had to give extra snacks through lunchtime. I gave regular dose the next morning and all was back to normal by suppertime. Thanks everyone.
