Default Halloween Busted!

So...every year I do smoothies via a rented machine for the 200+ kids that walk my street and float rum on the top for the adults that are following them around.

This one kid that lives in the neighborhood...about 10 or 11 that I know to be type 1 because I have spent some time talking w/ his mom and dad, is standing there waiting for a smoothie that is 99 percent corn syrup or fructose, and 1% strawberry. Probably an excellent emergency drink for type 1s.

Anyway, he doesn't know me. I say "whats your name" (just to be sure) and he responds "Todd" as I hand him a 12 oz frozen drink. He is SMILING...not at me, but at the drink. As he starts to sip it I ask "Todd, any idea how many carbs are in your hand there?"......

Holy s**t...he looked like he'd seen a real ghost. I think he remembered, in all the excitement, where he was...Alex's house who he knows and has talked D with on the school bus.

He responded "no". I said " A LOT!" He was lost in his head for a response. He finally said..."my mother is going to give me some insulin tonight"...lol, I'm thinking "I bet she is"

I have no doubt his mother had said something to the effect of when you come home we'll portion out candy and shoot(MDI)..blah, blah. He sipped his smoothie and watched me over the top of his cup at the same time while walking off w/ 6 or 7 friends. He's gotta be 400+ by the time he gets home...and when he lies about what he has had to eat....his mother will no doubt see the bright red tounge that says differently. He was so happy, busted or not.

I say let him enjoy his drink with his friends and correct later! What a neat idea with the smoothies. I handed out juice boxes and I doubt that was near as exciting!

I think that is definitely a great idea.. especially the adult ones LOL.. I would have let him enjoy it too.. he'll get the correction he needs.. we tend to let K have what she wants on Halloween night, we just keep chasing her around to dose her LOL..

Probably with all the excitment that smoothie was needed! Abby stayed at a nice 106 with all the walking. Had two pieces of candy along the way that I didn't correct for (good thing!) and at bed was only 123.

Default Let them eat cake!

I say way to go for makinghim hink about what he was doing BUT hey it's Halloween and let him enhjoy his drink - How often do you think that happens?

I loved Halloween last night - Avery may have diabetes but darn she had a great time running around and you know her nbumbers were pretty decent - She had a nice spike of 358 around 10pom but corrected nicely and all was well this morning...

You sound like a fun dad (and negihbor!) - If I remember I;'ll jave to do something for the parents next year

What a great story! I would have loved to have seen the kid's face.

And I love it when neighbors remember the parents!!

Smile i have no idea what my kids numbers were

Halloween is one of thoose nights that we just let go of the hold that D has on us. This was my first year without kids. Adam age 14 went to his girlfriends house, let me repeat "HIS GIRLFRIENDS". He ran around the nieghborhood with her and her brothers( who all know he has D). Ans he met her father.....what a very good job he did of introducing himself and being polite. I was impressed and so was the father( no other boy has ever had enough courage to meet him).

My daughter was with her father this year so that left me sitting at home passing out candy.

Do ya'll remember your first COOL halloween?

My son is growing up<boo freaking hoo> boo -hoo!

With all the walking, Stevie stayed at around 150.
By bed time she dropped to 75 (even with candy).

Love the smoothie idea. We had a family in our neighborhood handing out candy to the kids, beer to the adults

I also love the smoothie idea (and the rum idea even more!), and think it's great you had the kid consider carbs. He is definitely old enough to be learning how to count them at age 12.
