Hi All,
We start pump training this Saturday and believe it or not, I am not as excited about it as I was. The main reason being that Sam is taking very little Levimer right now and we continue to lower the dose so we can get Novolog in at meals. Getting Novolog in at meals has been a real challenge since he is usually low before he eats. We have played with the Levimer dose for weeks now and he is at 8 units. He tests 6-8 times a day and is either low or in the normal range. My question: What insulin will he take with the pump? Will it be Novolog? The pump, from what I have read on this forum, when first started tends to make the bs lower, is that right? The cgms comes tomorrow but the cde wants to wait until he has been on the pump a while before starting it. My fear is he will have more lows than he does now. Did anyone else have these anxieties before going on the pump?

It's like being diagnosed all over again when you start the pump.
For our start, we were started at a conservative level of basal...Liv ran higher and we increased to get her into range.Congrats on the Pump start and CGM start. I hope it all goes smoothly.

Anxiety?!? That might be an understatement!
Pump start can bring about a roller coaster of emotions. The pump can turn out to be a really good tool in helping manage diabetes. So much more freedom for eating/snacking for the child. We use Novolog in the pump. At pump start, our daughter ran high...really high for three or four days. Both her basal rate and carb to insulin ratio had to be changed quite a bit. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you!

Ditto Sheree. We were started at conservative basals as well and increased as needed.
I think everyone gets nervous before going "live" with the pump. To hopefully put your mind a little at ease (keeping in mind YDMV) we have had lows with the pump but NEVER as severe of lows as we had on MDI. I hope all goes well. I'm surprised the cde wants to wait...I would think the CGMS would be very helpful with the pump start?? I would think since you are already using Novalog, that is what they would have you start pumping with. We LOVE pumping compared to MDI.

Hi Val,
The pump uses Novolog. We use Humalog, same thing. It sounds like you've got great numbers on MDI - that was the case for my dh as well. He was really reluctant to go to the pump because he was pretty happy with his A1C's, but he went on when dd started pumping so that she wouldn't have to do it alone. That was back in February. Now he won't go back to MDI. He really likes the ease of pre-bolusing for meals with the pump and being able to take away basal instead of having to eat to feed the Lantus. He started CGM-ing a couple of months ago and that really won him over. He loves being able to see the trends and make informed changes to his basal, bolus, etc. It also taught us the importance of pre-bolusing, especially for breakfast when the postmeal peak was really high. As for going low, most people have better numbers on the pump, not necessarily lower. In fact, our cde told us that pumpers experience 20 times fewer hypoglycemic episodes than those on MDI! I don't know that it has been so dramatic for us, but dh and dd both hit much fewer lows on the pump. DH's A1c has improved by a few tenths already (even before the CGM). We had a rocky pump start with Isabelle, but I expect this A1c to be her best yet. As for numbers at the start, dh hit the ground running. DD's numbers ran a bit high for a while. If I had to do it again I wouldn't be so nervous about adjusting the basals and boluses without contacting the doctor. I didn't give myself enough credit. I do it all the time now. Best of luck with Sam's pump start! I think you'll like it much more than you expect to...

Aw, thanks y'all for making me feel less nervous. I am sure some of this is fear of the unknown. When I read the posts from the pumpers needing help, I feel overwhelmed even thinking about the adjustments we will have to make.
Please be patient with me when Sam starts pumping. I will have a lot of questions for sure.
