Default Who carries the meter/supplies at school in the lower grades?

DD will be in 1/2 day kindergarten this year. I'm trying to think through how I'd like things to be done and so far I've got more questions than answers.

So what do you do with the meter and low supplies at school?

Currently I've got a little diabetes bag we take everywhere. At school she will likely be tested primarily in the nurse's office. DD is on the Ping, and we only have 1 meter remote. I would like to use the same meter at school so at home I can look at it and make pump setting changes as necessary.

Is it reasonable to send the diabetes bag to school and have Charlotte make sure that it goes with her everywhere-- to specials and whatnot-- and to the nurse when she needs to be tested? The bag I have now is small. It holds her meter case, a juice box or two, some candies and the Carb King book. I'll have backup supplies in the nurses office, and perhaps in the classroom as well. But is this too much to ask of a kindergartner? To carry her supplies everywhere?

Hailey has her supplies in a Hello Kitty lunch bag and she always takes it with her. At school she sometimes keeps it in her classroom and sometimes in the nurses office. There are also extra supplies in the nurses office. Just make sure she doesn't leave it in the sun if she takes it out at recess or lunch. She tests on the same meter ( PDM) at school and home.

Can you use another meter and bolus from the pump at school? To keep the meter remote safe?

we leave her kit that we take everywhere with us in the nurses office

In her classroom in her backpack she has a juice box and in the specials classrooms and library there is a roll of tabs for her.

This way if the nurse or clinical aide has to go to mckenna for help, they will grab the whole kit or if mckenna is brought to them the kit is already there.

we have never had an issue this way with where is it.

The one difference is for before or after school care, mckenna will have her kit in her backpack and then at 845 take it to the nurses office and if she does after school care or an art progrm then she picks it up after school and keeps it with her in her backpack. but with both of those instances she is going to be in one room until we pick her up.

I was in a kindergarten classroom where one little boy had his meter (it was in a reusable grocery bag, so I imagine there were more supplies in there, I didn't look) in the classroom with him. When he needed to test, someone from the office came to help him.

I am a bit paranoid about losing it. But at the same time, if we use a separate meter at school then unless the nurse is sending home daily logs, I won't have the bg records from school. And sending the meter remote just seems easier.

we only log school hours, so my dd has a log in her kit and they fill it in and then they fill in thier paperwork too. the log stays with her kit.

The person that is responsible for taking care of my son at school keeps the meter and low supplies with her. If he feels low or needs checked, whatever teacher's class he is in calls her and she goes to where he is. We put juice in all the classrooms he visits just in case they have a lockdown or something out of the ordinary were to happen.

Our school asks that he have a meter that is left in the nurses office. The nurse emailed me the numbers at the end of the day.
He also has a bag that goes with him everywhere. It has stuff to treat lows and an extra meter. The nurse last year went above and beyond and made a lamenated detailed list of what is to be done in the event of a lockdown. That came in handy since they had an unscheduled lockdown drill and a bomb threat last year.

The school nurse has a spare meter and keeps the pump controller/ meter in her office. DD goes to the nurse or the nurse comes to her, depending on what is going on.

Each classroom she is in (main, music, art, gym, etc.) has a box of emergency supplies--if there was a lockdown, etc. I bought inexpensive pencil boxes and put in each roll of glucose, packet of honey, peanut butter crackers, granola cookie). Last year I put a label on the outside with DD's picture that identified what it was and asked that it be returned at the end of the year.

DD also carries some glucose in her backpack.
