Default So excited to have found this forum....

My name is Amber and my boyfriend's 9 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Type 1. She is doing great and it has been a major experience for all of us. So far things have been great regarding Bre's attitude and she has been really excited about it all b/c she feels so much better now.

I have just purchased Type 1 for Dummies book and can't wait to get to reading it.

I just wanted to introduce myself.

Amber

Amber glad you found CWD....but I am sorry for the reasons you had to come here. You will find alot of info on this forum. There are a ton of books on diabetes and kids too. I haven't read the diabetes for dummies book, but considering the format of those books (which i love) I am sure it is a great place to start. I like the Understanding Diabetes...aka the Pink Panther book...do you have that? I think you will also benefit from reading Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner and Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Children, Adolescents and Young Adults -- and Their Caregivers by Ragnar Hanas
If you have any questions or just need to vent...cwd is the place to do it! We will be hitting our year mark soon....I won't lie it never gets easy....but you adapt and make it work.

We do have the Pink Panther book and have been sitting down and reading it. Our main issue/concern is that her mother (does not have custody, but does have visitation) has not been attending the classes or doctor's appointments for Bre but she does have visitation for the month of July. I have cried myself to sleep at night worried about things that can occur and the possibilities that are out there.

We have been doing everything we can to teach Breana how to calculate everything, document all the info needed and give herself her shots. She has done wonderful with everything but it is still a concern of ours. Her mother doesn't carefully count the carbs and rounds the numbers (grams of carbs) off to do the formula to get the dosage. It is a very scary situation but we are getting Bre on the right page to be able to do things on her own. She has even called us several times while at her mom's to notify us that her mom wasn't doing things right and she was worried about her dosage being wrong.

The Dummies book has been amazing so far!! I would recommend this for everyone. I have a Kindle Fire and the book was only $9.99.

Thank you guys so much for the support!! I am thankful to have support from parents that are going through or have gone through what we are going through now.

Amber

We have been reading the Pink Panther book and been teaching her how to do things on her own, with our rechecking her calculations.

I started reading the Dummies book for Type 1 and I have to say that I have learned so much in this book. I purchased it on my Kindle Fire for only $9.99 and I have to say it was a great investment.

I have learned a lot from just going through some of the older posts here on the forum.

Thank you all for the warm welcoming!!!!

Welcome,

I would just be careful how much you expect her to do right now. She is only 9 and it can be very overwhelming, even for an adult. I realize you are concerned about her biological mother, but that is something the adults need to work out. It should not be placed on the child's shoulders.

Just my 2 cents.
