Default Glucagon...a reminder for us all

We had an incident the other night that could have quickly turned worse and require the use of the glucagon. My husband asked me, how much do we use now?

First, keep in mind that as your child gets older/heavier that the amount needed will change.

Second, don't throw the old one out! Practice on it. It's going in the sharps bin, so you might as well practice taking the safety off, mixing it and injecting it (into the sink or an orange of course).

Luckily in our case we didn't need it, and hope we never do, but it's always good to be familiar with how it works.

Oh and check the expiration dates regularly - for some reason those dates on the glucogon box seem to come around and catch me off guard every time

We always practice with one of our used ones, but then I turn the other expired ones over to the school. (We replace ours every year whether we need to or not - just to keep them "fresh")

School? Why would the school need an expired Glucagon?

We give our expired Glucagon to our school nurse, who uses it for training those who have volunteered to administer it in an emergency in her absence.

The first thing I do when we get the new ones is put an extra large label with the expiration date on it and then put that date in my calendar as well.

Oh, okay - I get it. We give ours to our endo clinic.

And generally the expiration on the outside of the box can differ from the expiration of the items on the inside...

Default glucagon

It's so easy to get lax on this when years go by without needing it...thanks for the reminder, and good idea to practice again. Plus, I should find out the current dose!

I agree with hanging onto the expired ones to practice on. When I actually practiced, it really felt a lot different than I had it in my mind.

I practiced being on the other side of the house, finding it as quickly as possible, and mixing it trying to simulate the stress I'd be under. It really did feel different.
