Not only would one have to worry about high levels of vitamin D, such as renal problems, but also hypercalcemia (which is a common side effect of taking high doses of vitamin D).
To the OP, I take 50,000 IU once a week as my vitamin d level was 8.9, normal at the lab I go to 20. I also take 2 multivitamins a day. I was taking calcium supplements but had to stop because of the vitamin d causing hypercalcemia when combined with calcium supplements.

Why not take less vitamin D plus more calcium, instead of more vitamin D and less calcium?

It was mainly because my calcium levels weren't significantly low as the vitamins d levels were. My calcium levels after stopping the calcium supplements have dropped to normal range, after being high for at least 2 weeks. So I don't need calcium anymore. As of right now I just need the vitamin d and the multivitamins.

Toxicity with vitamin D3 is more rare at low dose but it's possible like you said. Plus if you go out frequently . The sun could give you a lot of vitamin d as well and you may need to adjust dosage according your vitamin d absorption from sun light. Sunscreen reduces vitamin d absorption.. Every metabolism could be different as well.. One could have a better absorption rate for vitamin d in food and supplement.. It's the reason you should have a regular monitoring of your vitamin d total blood level and converted vitamin d . Some diseases have vitamin d contraindicated.
Example of toxicity at very high dose..Accidental case. 1,700,000 IU daily of vitamin d3 during 7 months before toxicity.. Son and father. 29- and 63-yr-old related males. They both survived . source: Vieth et al. 2002. Lancet 359:672
