Default Question for those who have/had a Toddler with Diabetes . . . ?

Have you managed to keep your toddler's blood glucose levels in a non-diabetic range - 75 to 120 - for a significant amount of time?

Thank you for any replies!

Two words- insulin pump.

Believe me, it is so hard to stay in range during the day because my daughter snacks quite a bit. And our range is pretty broad (80-180) because of my daughter's age. But our nighttime control has improved dramatically since we started pumping. For example, last night, I checked K at 7:15 and she was 131. At 11 she was 127 and she woke up this morning at 108. 12 hours of BS readings between 131 and 108 make me a very very happy mommy

I guess I should have added "On MDI" since we are not pumping.

ETA: Meant to say thank you!

We are still on MDI and Andy was Dx at 10 months old. We used then (and now) range of 80 - 180. We have had pretty good luck keeping under 200 most of the time. A1C's have been between 6.2 and 7.5 (that one due to excessive illness) over the past 5 and half years of this.

No, we never achieved that on mixed insulins or on MDI.

I tried, believe me I tried. I followed the rules - then I made my own rules and asked for ideas and followed those rules and tried even harder. I made myself very ill trying and wondering why it wouldn't happen for us. Every day (or what felt like every day) we saw numbers between 39 and 390.

Then, when she was 5 we got a pump, and yes, then we could get numbers in that range for 60-80% of the time, although even now our targets are 70 - 180.

Steven was a little older then toddler, 3 years, 4 months .There have been days, few and far between, where his BGs have been in range. Usually between 70-150 though. I dont think we've ever had a day where it was any tighter then that.

Um, we didnt'. Seriously, dd was dx at age 4. Her target was 150. And we didn't even correct until she was close to 250 since she needed 1 unit for every humdred points above 150. So we gave her a unit at 225 (due to rounding up .75 units). So no, we didn't stay in the 75 to 120 range and if we ever got there it was practically by accident.

The pump changed all that. I could dose and correct for a 170. I could dose for 5 carbs. And the cgm changed EVERYTHING. Now I could be way more aggressive bc I could make judgements on trends rather than just numbers and have alarms go off if we strayed too far.

Also, she grew up. And her target went to 120. And her correction factor changed. And suddenly 10 carbs and a little over target might mean a whole unit. I read here about diluted insulin and wish I had know about that when dd was little. I think on mdi, diluted insulin is the way to go to keep a tight range.

We would only see that range of BG's part of the time. Our endo does not like to run toddlers that close because of the hypoglycemia. Our range was 100-200 and sometimes we would go lower and higher.

Ds was dx'd at 23 months old. His target was 100 to 200, but obviously we tried to keep him closer to 100 than 200. His endo was always happy with his a1c's. We were always in the low 7's until we got on the pump in kindergarten.

Nope. Not unless all the planets aligned perfectly once and we maybe had that for 4 or 5 hours.

We targeted 180. Honestly, the endo just wanted us under 200. At that age a 70 would have sent us into reaction mode and we would have been carbing her up. We didn't switch to a pump until last year and even with the pump we aren't in tight control. It has helped stabilize her, though. I think we kept the 180 target until she was 4-ish, then bumped to 150 and now to 125 at 7.
