Default Holly Molly, BG goes up fast when there's no basal!

DS's site came out this afternoon. Somehow, the cannula just popped out of the skin. Our first lost site since we started pumping. We use EMLA for site changes. I asked DS if he'd be ok doing a change without numbing, but he'd have none of it. So, I was thinking, hour and a half without basal, how high can the BG get? OHHH, pretty high... He was 124 when the site came out. 1.5 hrs later: 303

At least now I know... Was that typical? Is that what you guys see?

Shocking, isn't it!

Tyler left his pump at home on a school day. Started the day on 90, by the time I got him home 5 hours later, he was 396! Imagine if he had gone the whole day without his basal.

I was shocked at how quickly BG could climb. Needless to say, hope to not do that again!

Maddie had a site blow recently - the canula had come out and folded back under the adhesive (a first in 6 years of pumping). And within a few hours she was over 400 and had ketones ( she almost never develops ketones) and she was sick!

If the site fails we get high numbers that take a heck of alot more insullin to come down. DKA can happer quickly in a pumper who is not getting their basal. Your high number is not out of the norm. If his site comes out and you are waiting an hour or more to restart, give him a shot of the basal he is missing in the meantime.

It's actually kind of scary when you think about it. Jacob had a site that stayed in but the tubing was separated from the cannula and it didn't get caught for a few hours. He even had a CGM. I thought at first it was a bolus I guessed at and corrected twice. Even after the site change he continued to climb and it took many more hours and several corrections to get him down. His CGM was pegged out high for quite awhile.

I just hope nothing ever, EVER happens where he would be without insulin for two or three days.

Yeah, that would be nice. He's 112 now, 15 mins after the juice box. We're about to have dinner, so hopefully some protein will help even things out...

Also, was his finger clean when you tested him?

I thought so. I wiped it off with a wet paper towel... But who knows, at this point anything is possible

I had no idea he was going to shoot up like that! What an eye-opener. Now I'm going to have nightmares...
