Default Leaky Gut and Type 1 diabetes/autoimmunity

The following are some links that Ive been studying this afternoon. After reading the other thread about antibiotic use I thought I would provide them. I am not saying that I believe that leaky gut is the only cause of type 1 diabetes or any other autoimmune disease, but I think there needs to be further studies. In the meantime, I will continue to make sure my children get beneficial bacteria whenever they are on antibiotics and try to avoid alot of the preservatives and additives in food.

Years ago a company called Alba was testing AT-1001, a drug which specifically targeted "leaky gut" by making the intestine less permeable. They did some testing in people with Celiac, and either testing or talking about testing, in people with Type-1. The Celiac stuff worked out. They have run several clinical trials, including some phase-II trials. But the Type-1 trials did not work out, and they have since stopped working with Type-1.

Obviously, there is no way to know if AT-1001 did not help type-1s because diabetes is unrelated to leaky gut, or if AT-1001 happened not to work with type-1 (but did with Celiac's). I don't think there is good evidence either way, but it is the only clinical trial I know of that tried to cure type-1 diabetes based on a "leaky gut" model.

If you come across a clinical (human) trial for type-1 based on "leaky gut" theory, please do tell me about it. It was very trendy a few years ago, but I haven't heard much recently. (Now the trendy thing is inflammation. Got several of those going on.....)

Actually this "trendy" thing of leaky gut and systemic yeast has been around for many years. At least in the naturopathic, wholistic and chiropractic world. Much of it is discussed in the book "The yeast connection" by William G. Crook. Unfortunately something like yeast and leaky gut cant be cured with pharmaceuticals. Therefore big pharma companies would have absolutely 0 interest in any clinical trials. Why bother studying something that can be cared for using dietary changes and possibly herbal remedies. Im not sure that clinical trials could be done to try and help people avoid type 1 diabetes by avoiding leaky gut because of the lack of controls. I would like to know how many children are tested for this condition at diagnosis. And I doubt very much that it would cure type 1 diabetes or any other autoimmune disease even if a person could take drugs or change their diet to be cured of leaky gut. But I do believe it is a risk factor. I know the pharmaceutical companies just hate when anything like leaky gut or inflammation come out as a cause for disease because usually they cant make a drug(and more money) to cure it
