Default Diabetes on Oprah today

Today is the diabetes show on Oprah called "The Silent Killer." I bet it is only about type 2. There were some comments on her website of people asking to clarify the difference between the two.

It will be primarily about type 2. Dr Oz has said on FB that they wont cover type 1 or explain the differences as type 1 is much more rare. I asked him to not forget our children, that he be their voice. I will watch it to see whats said as Im curious

I wonder how many comments this show will inspire people we know to make to us about our kids?

Oh Im sure that people will watch and get the wrong idea about our kids. Thats why I wish they would devote a few minutes of the show to explaining the differences between the 2 types. I think if they louse it up too bad we should all email Oprah and tell her that we're disapointed. She has a responsibility as being one of the most viewed shows on TV to this right.

I think you are right Becky. I have already received texts from friends. I think we (parents of Type 1's and Type 1's themselves) will probably have some explaining to do to correct the assumptions that will be made because of this widely viewed show. Well, that is if we choose to. I think it just is another example of the two diseases being lumped together. It is unfortunate. I have relatives that have no idea that Type 1 and Type 2 are very different "beasts". Luckily for me, they ask questions and don't make general statements or assumptions - at least - so far.

I watched 1/2 of the show. I was really disappointed when they got the type 1 44 year old lady on the show who had kidney failure and an amputated leg. She said the reason she got that way was because she thought it was okay to eat sugar (like soda and "regular cake") if she took insulin.

Ummmm.....I'm guessing she didn't take enough insulin........for a long time.......

They did distinguish between type 1 and type 2 and I think it's fine that the majority of the show was dedicated to type 2 because that's what the majority of people have. Just really didn't like the type 1 lady on there, though.

Oh for pete sake! Is that necessary? Do they do that for shock value? I suppose they do. It gets peoples attention, everyone looks sad for her. What a dumb thing to say. I thought i could have sugar if i took insulin. boy is that simplifying things (dumbing down) so we will have some explaining to do then if people see that foolishness

It was definitely for shock value. They even show someone unwrapping the crusty bloody dressings on her leg. Gross.

Ugh... there's a mom at my daughter's preschool that has already had part of her leg amputated and a portion of her other foot.. it really makes me sad because she can't be more than 10 years older than me (that is a guess, but really she does not LOOK that old.. definitely not "grandma" age if that makes sense), and I know *I* won't be there in 10 years....

Haven't had a chance to watch the show yet. I'll be watching it tonight on the 11:00 pm replay but here's the link to the related info to today's show...
