She said exactly what I feel but in a much nicer way! I am so tired of misinformation being spewed by people in the media. It makes my life so much harder when I have to explain that they were refering to type 2 not type 1. I don't watch Oprah. Especialy not when Dr. Oz is on.

I agree and the information they spew about type 2 isn't even correct. That makes it even worse.

not only does it suck that Oprah and Dr. Oz give out the wrong information but tv and movies are always giving false information about type 1 Diabetes. I saw a movie where the charachter with D was low and they treated it by giveing her a propel water ( which we know you should drink juice or have tabs). It makes me mad because they should do their research and protray real D.

I did see Dr Oz discussing diabetes once. He lanced a woman's finger, she went "ahhhhh" and turned white as a ghost, the audience went " ohhhhh" and looked concerned LOL I so wish I could have been there with Steven. I would have said, "hold on, let me and Steve show you how thats done"

What Dr Oz is saying on FB:

"Dr. Mehmet Oz: i should clarify this is type 2 diabetes, which accounts for >90% of diabetes cases. type 1 diabetes is also a huge problem, but it's rarer and not related to weight."

I dont think he will be mentioning type 1 on the show but I could be wrong. Many of us that have him on FB are asking that he explain the differences in the 2 types

I think it's unfortunate - I think it needs to be mentioned at least in the capacity of how different the disease really is. It really bothers me that it's almost never mentioned in that capacity.

There's a local anchor man here in Austin who is a type 1, and they did a little news series on him when he went on a pump about 8 years ago.. that's literally the ONLY time I have seen T1 addressed specifically on TV..but it was local (and I doubt anyone else remembers it), so it almost doesn't count.

You're lucky your local anchor mentioned it. Here in Kansas City there's a "health expert" on the local Fox4 channel that did a spot on diabetes a few weeks ago. Throughout the whole thing, she never mentioned type 2, just diabetes in general and touted how pills, diet and exercise was the cure-all. My DH and I composed a POLITE letter to the station manager asking that for future stories that they distinguish between type 1 and 2, as it's hard enough for us to try and educate people without stories like theirs. Much to our suprise, the lady that did the story called my DH on the phone. She started off by saying that she rewatched her story, and yes, she never did say type 2 and should have. But then, she got all hostile and said that all of her other viewers just knew she was talking about type 2 because the story showed adults, (to which my DH mentioned that type 1 d kids do grow up to become adults) and that type 1's are in the minority anyway. She totally missed the point, but before we could further state our case, she just said that she just had to call and defend her story and hung up. I'm guessing that it wasn't a voluntary call, but probably required by a supervisor or something. Ah well, maybe next time she does a story about diabetes she will think twice about not specifying which type it is she is reporting on... or else the station will get another email from us!

I did leave another comment for Dr Oz that there are over a million people with type 1 in this country alone. I asked him to please not forget our children. He needs to be their voice and help us raise awareness

Apparently a group of women from one of the Dayton area churches was involved in bringing Oprah's attention to Type II diabetes.
