Default Uh-Oh..Could This Be It? I Really Hope Not

Caleb has been complaining of ear pain for 2 days now. He's very prone to ear infections and he's not the type of kid to "fake it" for attention. After school I could tell he didn't feel good and he had a low grade temp of 100.2. So, being the overworried mom I am, I took him to urgent care. Turns out he doesn't have an ear infection (yay!) but they think we might be seeing the first signs of the flu. They had 2 doctors look at him and asked if he's been around anyone who was sick and I told them how I'm just now getting over the flu myself, so they also made him wear a mask. While we were there waiting he just seemed to get really tired and started getting really purple and puffy under his eyes. We had just had dinner right before we went to the hospital, but he said that he didn't feel 'low tired'. I think he's just starting to feel yucky. So we got send home with instructions to give Tylenol and Mortin if he needs it, lots of fluids and rest. At 6pm I gave him some Ibuprofin (sp?) and at bedtime at 7:30pm his temp was 99.9 with a bg of 76. On the way home in the car he also started complaining that his chest hurt up by his right shoulder in the front, so I'll be keeping an eye on that. I'm undecided about whether or not he will go to school tomorrow. Obviously if he's got a fever or cough I will keep him home. If not, I will just get him up and ready and see how he's doing. We've had a few other scares where I thought for sure he was getting sick, but he always seemed to fight it and never really have anything more than a stuffy nose for a day or two. This is the first fever (thankfully it's pretty low) we've had since he had influenza right before the D dx and that was 6 months ago. So I'm crossing my fingers that the doctors tonight are wrong and that he'll bounce back from feeling cruddy tonight.

I hope he's not getting the flu.. hopefully the fever and all symptoms will magically dissappear by morning.

That's what I'm hoping for!

If it were my son, I'd plan to keep him home. If he's developing the flu, you don't need to expose anyone else.

I agree. He's obviously fighting something, and I think I'd give him a day to rest and recover before sending him back in the trenches of school.
Good luck.

Well he's definately staying home. He got up to go to the bathroom and ended up missing a couple steps on the way back to bed. He's not hurt..just scared us both pretty bad. When I was hugging him I could feel the heat coming off him. Sure enough..his temp is 101.7. Bg is 133. He's back in bed so I'm hoping he will be able to fall back asleep quickly. This is when I am thankful that the boys are downstairs in the same room with DH and I.

Oh No! I pray it is not the flu. If you think he may have it I would make sure he started tamiflu.

oh, poor kid. And poor you! I bet you didn't sleep much after that. I would probably get him in to the doc today and get the flu test. That fever spike makes me think flu. The tamiflu really works, especially if you get it started quickly after the onset.
Good luck.

Temp this morning is 100.3. Bg is 71. I will check for ketones the next time he has to go to the bathroom. He told me that he feels like he did right before we found out he had D..he tested positive for the flu (which the drs think was the final D trigger). He also says his body hurts inside..his words. Guess we aren't getting lucky and that he really is getting something. I'm betting it's going to turn into the flu. :-(

Lunchtime check-bg was 64. Temp: 100.3. He is still complaining of ear pain and now says his head hurts. He wanted chicken noodle soup for lunch and not doesn't want to eat it. He hasn't had to go to the bathroom, so I haven't been able to check for ketones.
