Default I'm an uncle and your opinion please

Congratulate me, I'm an uncle... again. Baby girl born yesterday.

Need you opinion and/or words of wisedom; she's in neo-natal because they can't regulate her blood sugars. They're not too high, on the contrary, they're too low. 2.0 range (36) Does this happen often? I'm a little worried.

Congrats on new niece. I wish I had words of wisdom about her BG's. Is she not nursing or taking formula? I know they checked Alex BG's several times after he was born as he just wanted to sleep and not nurse. I hope it gets figured out fast.

Congratulations Uncle
My son was low too they gave sugar water
and once nursing though he was fine
and he's not D, yet
, now 15yrs old.
I think it can be fairly common and unrelated to D dx.

My son Sebastian had the same problem when he was born. He was in the NICU for 11 days trying to get his blood sugar to regulate. It was very scary and I am glad that at the time I didn't understand the full extent of it. Sebastian needed to be on a feeding tube because he had difficulty swallowing but that changed after a few days.

From what I can remember, your niece will have her BG's tested often using her toes. She will be very sensitive to having her feet touched for awhile after she is brought home. They will be monitoring how much she eats and what her diapers weigh. it may take longer than anyone likes to have those BG's get regulated and their may be some setbacks but she should be fine. At least from my experience with Sebastian, she should be fine. Also, even though she has low BG's now does not mean she will have diabetes later in life.

I wish I could help you more. When Sebastian was 6 days old in the NICU, my STBX had an emergency appendectomy which led to a serious infection. He was two floors above Sebi and they were discharged 12 hours apart. My mother handled Sebastian while I took care of STBX, and my father watched Alex and Hawke.

I will be praying for your niece and her family. I know how hard and scary it is to have a baby in the NICU.

Patrick, my older son, was in the NICU for 3 days because of low BGs related to my diabetes and his low birth weight. My little guy, Will, was only in the NICU for a few hours because I was much more regulated (on the pump) with my second full term pregnancy. Low BGs after birth happen very frequently in children of women with diabetes (any type) but it happens less frequently in women with no history of abnormal BGs or diabetes during pregnancy.

Sugar water can aggravate low BGs that are related to an overproduction of insulin, and breastmilk, formula or IVs are "better" at lessening the risk of rebound lows later. (Similar to how it's good to follow up with a protein snack after treating a low in PWD.) The protein and fat in breastmilk or formula and/or the constant delivery of the IV fluid would help to keep BGs up until they are stable.

Pat and Will both had their BG tested on their heels, which left huge blue bruises all over their poor feet. My mother bought some really soft cotton socks that I used for both of my boys after they were born to help provide a cushion since both were kickers. I was given some of those little "dot" bandaids to use at home with Patrick, and I bought some for Will after he was born.

Congratulations, BTW. Try not to worry, as it will most likely be a temporary situation, and she'll get good care in the NICU.
