Lasik Surgery

So, I am curious, has any adult diabetics (type 1) ever considered getting their nearsightedness corrected in surgery? My non-diabetic brother is getting Lasik, and I was wondering if diabetics getting that kind of surgery could cause complications. As of yet, my eye checks have all shown that I have no deposits that may cause blindness, but I wonder if getting a surgery like that could make the risk greater. Or does one have nothing to do with the other?

There might be a risk of the current surgery causing focusing problems during future laser surgery to zap leaking capillaries? I don't know.

Maybe you could hunt the Internet for a moderated PRK/Lasik message board, ask there?

When Shane, my hubby who is type1, asked about lasik he was told that the healing time was the reason that people with diabetes are not encouraged to do it. Since the healing time may be longer it can lead to infections, and cause damage that way, I don't think the same kind as diabetes related eye issues with the vessels. That was the answer we got anyhow, I don't know if that is the whole of it or not.

You may want to ask the people at a lasik clinic, or ask your regular eye doctor why. They may know better, or why.

But the healing time isn't really slower for diabetics with really tight control, is it? I though high blood sugar caused the slow healing. So if your most recent A1c was, for example, 6, then I don't see why Lasik surgery would be a problem.
