I don't know what's with me these past few days, but I have broken down in tears more often than not after reading almost anything about D and tonight my son caught me crying. I really hate doing that in front of him. With a big smile on his face he insists I tell him why. I really didn't want to say I was upset with him having D, so I just said sometimes I get sad reading all this stuff. He puts his arm around me and says, "Mom, your sad because of reading all this, or your sad because I have diabetes?" At that point, I couldn't keep myself from breaking down even more. He leans over and puts his arm around me and says, "Mom, you don't have to be sad because I have Diabetes. I'm not sad I have it, and you don't have to be." Gives me a kiss on the forehead and walks away.
Then comes back 5 minutes later and starts discussing important stuff....taking him to the store to buy a video game book ![]() I wonder how they do it sometimes. Our kids seem to be the strong ones. They are the ones with this Disease and just look at how they deal with it. It's amazing.

Oh my god, this made me cry-and like you- it doesn't take much these days.
Have you read the thread " Welcome to Holland" - made me cry heaps. Good though. Cam is only 5 and doesn't understand the full implications of D but he is so matter of fact about it all, he constantly amazes me.

Martha,
I think it is wonderful that you are able to open up to Tim and he to you. What a wonderful mother-son relationship. I hope I can achieve the same with my boys when they grow up. Tim is an amazing person, and I'm sure he gets that from you ![]() Kids are courage itself. They have this amazing ability to take the cards life has dealt them and mix them all up and play their own 'game'. Martha, what you are feeling sounds so familiar...please see someone. Take care of yourself. PM me if you need to 'talk' things out. (((HUGS)))

Martha, maybe it is time to pat yourself on the back and acknowledge....you have done a GREAT job raising that young man! Regardless of the dreaded "d".
As for the tearing up.....I thought it was just me. I'm new here....my son is only 2 months into this and I shed a tear seems like daily. Guess it is just mom hormones. They are our babies. |

Marthar what a story it truly made me get goosebumps & a tear in my eye... I have had quite a few days like that recently, when i look at Jack & think how amazing he copes with it all. Yesterday he had a 1-2-1 swimming lesson & while my husband & i sat there watching him swim his best i started to fill up! When you stand back & watch how well they cope & still give 100% it makes you feel so proud.
May i just say that for your son to approach you & kiss you & say kind words is amazing...you truly do have a amazing son. If you need to chat (as i do at present) feel free to get in touch. Take care x |

Reading your post made me tear up. We're only 4 months into this and I have days where I look at her and just want to cry because she has D.
You have an amazing son!

That is absolutely beautiful! When you can see what a wonderful person your child has become - that is priceless. I hate D and wish that none of our children had to deal with it - but at the same time I think that it matures our children and teaches them love and apathy that children without D (or another issue) just don't get.

Martha, first {{big hugs**** to you!!! I have days like this too.
I know my son is concerned with his health because he cares so well for himself (not to say there isn't a forgotten bolus here or there but he is human), but his priority is joy as much of it as he can fill up in his life. I'm a little researchaholic in quest of knowledge - with that means I end up reading bad things that could happen many many years from now - but the bad things may never happen. I really think our kids focus is different. My son's focus is not diabetes. The last 6 months I'd say every couple of weeks he says to me in different ways "what do you do for fun, mom?" I'm not modeling too well what life looks likes in your forties I guess. He doesn't know it, but he really has been teaching me I've almost forgotten how to have fun, and maybe my focus has been alittle too serious sometimes. I think it's so cool when I learn things from my kids. Your son sounds awesome and like others have said - you and your husband have done a wonderful job raising him with values of perseverence, patience and vision that he is more than diabetes. Well done!!!
