Default FYI: Phenergan gel

After the latest bout with the stomach bug landed Jayden in the ER, I asked the endo for a prescription for an anti-emetic medication. She told me she had heard about, but never prescribed, Phenergan gel. It takes the place of the suppositories or pills. So she wrote me the script, and I took it to have it filled. There is a compounding pharmacy here that makes it. My prescription contained three tubes, 25mg each. Shelf life, unrefrigerated (cannot be refrigerated) is six months. The directions are simply to place it on the inside of the wrist and rub it in. I am loving the whole idea of it!

And the best part? Insurance doesn't cover it, but the cost of the entire prescription was $6.50!

Just sharing some new knowledge - I didn't even know this existed, but the pharmacy said it's pretty popular.

our old endo gave us rx for this, but we were never able to find a pharmacy that did compounding close by. We have used suppositories. I am glad you bought this up. I am going to ask our new endo about it. Sure would be easier then suppositories.

All you have to do is go to google and type in " 'your local major city' compounding pharmacy". There's plenty of them nearby, for me.

I love the gel. My four year old just used it not too long ago for a stomach virus. It was the first virus he ever had and that is what we were prescribed. A week or so later Aidan got the virus of course (this was before dx) and I called to see if we could use it on him and the ped said no. Not for use in children under 2!! Bummer. But he is over 2 now so if a virus strikes I am asking for the gel. Wouldn't it be nice if they made all medicine in the form of a gel that you just rubbed on your wrists?? And how bout if insulin could be given that way? That would be great!!

Yes, we've used it a couple of times now. Walgreens is the only pharmacy in this area that seems to do the compounding. It's worked great for us in the past. I was a little worried that it would affect his numbers, but we did very well with it.

that sounds really cool, I could have used that with my severe morning sickness, I'd often throw up the zofran and phenegran pills.

We were prescribed it a couple months after Brandon was dx, but only because he had his adenoids out. They said that if the anesthesia made his nauseous, the cream would be better. I got 6 syringes of it, but I was told that it was only good for 45 (might have been 30) days. The pharmacist told me that the cream starts to break down and separate after that. Now, I don't know if there is a GEL that lasts longer. I would like to ask about it at our next appointment. I do know it works though. About 3 weeks after we got it, my husband got some stomach bug and after he used it he didn't feel sick to his stomach anymore.
