New diabetes treatment good news: govt

July 5, 2008, 5:33 pm A new diabetes treatment program eliminating the need for daily insulin injections is set to make life easier for young sufferers in Queensland.
State Health Minister Stephen Robertson said that with 50 new cases of Type 2 diabetes diagnosed in Queensland every day, the Insulin Pump Program at the Royal Childrens Hospital would treat up to 150 young diabetes patients a year.

"Diabetes is one of the few conditions for which prevalence and death rates are steadily increasing each year," he said.
Mr Robertson said the new treatment program meant patients could have their insulin administered through an epipen rather than a needle.

"The epipen gives a small amount of insulin continuously, eliminating the need for daily insulin injections.

"Insulin pump therapy is an increasingly popular treatment method because with appropriate use, it can provide better control of blood glucose levels."

The pump also allows regular adjustments to the amount of insulin delivered in response to changing blood glucose levels with food and physical activity.

The word Epipen misused. I think they meant insulin pump.

I also don't think most Type 2 diabetics are put on a pump immediately, nor are the type 2s likely to die soon. I wonder if they meant Type 1.

The pump program may be new, but pump therapy certainly isn't.

My husband used to live in Australia, so he follows the news sources there. He read this story to me this morning and we got a big laugh out of it. There are some really, really stupid reporters out there...

wow, that one just makes you laugh.. last time I check epipens had nothing to do with diabetes.. and type 2s aren't put on pumps or insulin right away, nor are they going to die in a day or two LOL.. hope no one takes that article too seriously.. or we'll be told to carry epipens instead of insulin.
