I can't do anything right! I am so careful about diet and insulin. My little guy's blood sugar has ranged from 29 to 408 this week. On different days, we have had a 29 at 5:30 a.m., a 42 at dinner, a 56 at lunch and highs at 2:00 a.m. It just seems random. He hs an exceptional math student in an above grade level program. His teacher sent me an e-mail letting me know he had failed a test & wondered how he was feeling that day. I told her that I had no idea if D had any impact. When low or dropping, he doesn't concentrate or work well. On that day, went from 408 in the early morning to 50 at dinner. This sure is frustrating sometimes. I guess it is the honeymoon? Does it get easier? How low until he has a seizure or I have the glucagon out? He seems to be able to feel himself dropping, but doesn't notice as well when he is sitting on a low number.

Chin up, you are doing things right! It's so hard not to take these numbers personally. Try not to have a reaction to the blood sugars in front of your son, if you have to say something like "well, that didn't work the way we'd hope" or "humm I wonder what caused this?"
Keep in contact with your Endo or CDE on adjusting his dosage. It sounds like he's really honeymooning. This will really cause a swing with his blood sugars along with the type of foods he eats, and not forgetting his activity level.
Log, log and log. Food, dosage, activity, and see if you can spot troubled meals, how long after activity is effecting him, or if a ratio or Lantus (background insulin) needs changing. Logging is one of your biggest assets. It's hard to remember back if he was playing video games all night or out playing football with the other boys. If he had pizza to eat, or nothing but a salad. When you did or didn't raise or lower a dose and how it worked.
You're doing a good job, keep doing what your doing. He hopefully will start recognizing his lows, once he's in a better range. Not to say we don't have a low and a 400 in one day, because it's happened to us. You're certainly NOT alone!
I wouldn't pull the glucagon out unless he was unresponsive, or if you can't keep a low up (where you keep treating it and it isn't rising).
You can do this. Keep venting, keep the questions coming, and we're here for you.

Those highs could be rebounds, I would definately lower his insulin. Are you in touch with the Endo?

Definately his D could affect his test and he sould be able to retake it. It sounds like he has a caring teacher so hopefully that wont be a problem.

Don't worry, it does get easier, he's probably still honeymooning, that can make things harder in some ways...Hang in there

You are just a few months into this (in the so-called honeymoon period), and his body is still producing insulin. I would tend to agree with Heather that he may be getting too much insulin, with rebounds from lows causing at least some of the highs. How much does he weigh, and how much insulin is he getting in total per day right now?

In answer to your question, both lows and highs can cause children to feel out of sorts and have effects on test scores.

It does get easier over time. Note that you REALLY want to help him develop his ability to sense lows. Let him measure whenever he thinks he may be going low.

Finally, look at the data to see if there are obvious trends that you and the endo can work with.

Good luck, and feel free to be on here often with any questions that arise.

It sounds like you have a caring teacher. Can you ask if he can test his sugar before a test? I have a 9 year old boy too. If you need anything, just ask. I hope things get easier soon.

Always remember to check: Is the insulin bad? Is your child sick? Has their activity level gone down?
Sometimes it's the simple things that we over look. So always keep it in mind before you drive yourself crazy.

That could also be caused by stacking insulin. Did you give too many corrections too close together?

We seem to have a lot in common...I am also the Mom of 3 sons, oldest 19 (freshman in College), middle 18 (senior in HS) and lil'Man 6 3/4 (as he likes to let everyone know). lil'Man is D dx 08/13/07 and we have also been fighting with #'s...this week mostly high, last week mostly low. I actually called the Endo last night for advice because I couldn't get his # to budge below 250. Until the last two weeks he usually ran right in target (80-150 day , 130-200 night.) I don't know if the "honeymoon" is over or if it is a little bug he keeps fighting but it is about to drive me crazy!!!

I try and take this thing one day at a time, right now we are taking it 2 hours at a time...hoping that the next BS reading will be better.

Hang in there, we do see good days and actually feel like we can handle anything on those days.

There have been times with math that my dd just can't seem to get problems I knew she could do the day before so I test her, find she's low, treat, and 20 minutes later she'll zoom through those same problems.

There is no magic number when a seizure will happen or you will need glucagon. Some kids are more prone to seizures than others. My dd has never had one and has been as low as 26. Others may have seizures at a number in the 40s or 50s. Part of it seems to be how long they are low too.

It is not uncommon to feel it when one is dropping suddenly but if they drop slowly the low can sneak up on them.

It does get easier though there will always be those bad numbers occasionally. It sounds like you still have some sorting out of numbers to do (which is not at all uncommon; it can take months for their bodies to settle down after dx and then they'll just go and have a growth spurt of soemthing). You are doign a great job though. Keep it up.
