Thought I would send out an update of our meeting(s) with the school district. We have had several meetings with our school district to help them prepare for our son entering Kindergarten next year... We requested a 504 (which the school did not feel was necessary and would not respond to our request for a meeting to determine eligibility)...
Our school district is 2200 children, and next year we will have 6 children with Type 1 - 3 of which will all be in kindergarten -and no school nurse! There have been lots of concerns raised and none addressed. Sooooo, I filled out an ADA school discrimination packet, got a call and we were given a wonderful advocate who just happens to be an attorney - he also has T1, as does his daughter... Monday morning our meeting was scheduled for 1pm. We wrote an email that morning to let everyone (school district) know that the ADA advocate/attorney would be joining our meeting via conference call. NOT EVEN KIDDING - the pupil services director and 504 coordinator called us to all of a sudden discuss the 504 (before the 1pm meeting).. ![]() So apparently, all you really need to do is mention LAWYER - and you too can receive accomodations for your child at school. Amazing how our world works, isn't it - so sad! Of course the meeting was great - our best to date..

Fantastic! And sad! We called an attorney today, too. He is a professor at a local university and is happy to assist us. I'm hoping we don't have to go that route, but great to know we have that resource. Good luck!

Our distritic apparently wasnt as smart as yours when we mentioned attorney. They just got their staff attorney involved.
We are in TN they play the good 'ole boy law system down here. Our district is abit larger (over 40000 kids) and we have 28 diabetics that have been denied 504s int he last 2 yrs. Goodluck at your meeting. I ope you are able to get everything you need in the 504.

Lindy, I'm an advocate and never let them know I'm coming. I'm not an attorney but I probably know your person from Wisconsin. We have heard many swear words through the door when they found out that I am there. But suddenly they are much more cooperative. I imagine that with an attorney they dang near had a heart attack. Good for you.
