Question What am I doing wrong??? Honeymoon???

Honeymoon??? I'm not sure why they call it a honeymoon. Noah is all over the place. Just when you think his numbers are looking good he has a major low or a major high. Is this a normal honeymoon, or is he ever going to have one? Maybe he already did when his numbers were great for a week..but still on the sliding scale.

I feel like pulling my hair out.

The crazy thing is he is still on 12 units of lantus in the am. And his sliding scale has increased a unit for the last three weeks. Is this really a honeymoon...

Under 100 6units
100 to 200 nits
200 to 300 nits
400 and above nits

His diet seems okay...I think
i.e
Breakfast- Whole grain waffle with peanut butter cool whip and fresh blueberry's, turkey sausage Pattie,1% milk
Lunch- tuna fish sandwich with lettuce, bag of lays chips, no added sugar apple sauce and% milk.
Dinner- Beef stew and a biscuit, 1% milk

Am I doing something wrong?

Noah can't wait to get his pump!!!

There is a very distinct possibility that the honeymoon is over, or at least getting there. What does his total daily dose look like? I know it varies based upon what he eats, but about how much fast acting is he averaging per day? What are his fasting numbers like?

To give us a sense of what's happening, you'd have to post his numbers for the last couple of days.

Normally the honeymoon would last longer. At this point I'd be worried he may be going low and rebounding (common at this stage after diagnosis)..

Not necessarily. It can last only a couple of weeks in a lot of cases. My daughter, and the kids of several others on this forum, never had a honeymoon. But I agree, in order to get a clear picture of what is going on it would be good to see numbers.

I think it would help if you posted at least a few days of his numbers, and his carb ratios. Did the doctor increase the Lantus as well? What are his fasting sleeptime numbers every two to three hours starting at midnight until morning wake up?

Some children don't have a honeymoon, or a pronouced one, so it doesn't always happen.

Noah and Max were diagnosed just days apart. (5 weeks ago today for us) I am going through the exact same thing. So ..... maybe that makes you feel better?? Max's numbers have been up and down like a yo-yo but then his numbers were really good for a week....and I got so excited! BUT..... then yesterday after lunch they started climbing. He was really high at his 2 am check....and woke up high. Which he hasn't done for a few weeks. So.....I know how you feel! Yes....I agree.....can't wait for the pump.

Forgot to mention his endo upped his lunch unit by 1 on the 19th of this month. His BS was in the upper 200 after school before that change. Noah does not have a 2 am test...unless he is running low for long periods of time. As long as he is over 130 before bed.

SHOULD I BE TESTING HIM AT 2AM???? Endo never mentioned this!!!

Many parents check at night for several reasons

- diabetes doesn't go away at night, you wouldn't not check for 8-10 hours during the day, so why is it ok at night?
- levels can and will fluctuate at night, growth hormones, delayed exercise lows etc
- there is something called Dead in Bed. It is rare, but a diabetic never wakes up in the morning, presumably from a low they never recovered from

During the night I have been extremely low for no apparent reason. Luckily I tested and treated. IMO theres too much risk for dangerous undetected lows at night.

Oops....I was trying to make you feel better. Now I made you feel worse that you haven't been checking Noah in the middle of the night. I always set my alarm to check Max at 2 am. He sleeps through the routine checks. It is amazing how many times he has been low even though his bedtime bs was just fine. If he is low, I give him some juice and cookies....and he goes back to sleep again. Sometimes if it is borderline at 2 am and I don't feed him......I reset my alarm at 4 to check again. I am surprised that your doctor didn't tell you to check Noah in the night.
