Default Hi, I'm new here!

I've been lurking here for about a week now and I think it's time I introduce myself to all of you! My name is Sam and about 3 weeks ago we found out that our 4 year old daughter, Grace, has type 1 diabetes. We live in the Bahamas, so we had to fly to the U.S. to meet with a diatician, a nurse, and of course the main doctor, the Endo. We are back home now, trying to deal with all of this. It came as a great shock to us all (we also have an 18 month old daughter, Isabella), but Grace is coping with the finger pricks, insulin shots and new eating plan quite well. Right now she is on NPH and Humalog twice a day.

Anyway, I have found this site to be very informative and interesting so I hope to get to know all of you during this journey of our lives :-)

Hi and welcome to the forums Sorry you had to join us...I'm glad your daughter is handeling things well, how are you doing?

BTW, Humalin and NPH are the same thing, is she also on Lantus or Levemir?

Or did you mean Humalog and NPH...Don't worry, I got the names mixed up in the beginning too, I had to mark then so I wouldn't get them mixed up.

Welcome Sam and of course, sorry you have to join this club. As many others will also say, you have come to the right place. I have learned so much from this site. You will find great information on how to care for your daughter from so many wonderful, caring, and supportive people.

No offense to all the Moms out there but I'm happy to see another DAD on the board

Hi Sam, Welcome!

I'm so sorry to hear about the dx of your little one. You've found a great place for support, though. The people here are great, and DO understand.
Take care, Jamie

I too am sorry you need to be here but glad you found it. Please use this site as a source of information, support or just a place to vent. You will be going through a whole range of emotions, shock, saddness, denial, anger, etc. We have all been there. The begining is very tough but as time goes on you will become more knowledgeable, and confident in taking care of your child. Take care,

Dear Sam,
here's my suggestions to the parents of newly diagnosed kids:
- dont hesitate to test often.
- be ware of hypos
- get a pump as soon as possible.
- get an aviva meter to be able to use base of thumb for testing instead of finger tips.
- read as much as you can. the more you know the better you'll manage.
- pray to the Lord. this is what i found THE most helpful.
- read, read and read. when you finished reading, then read more.
good luck!

Welcome aboard! Sorry you had a reason to join this place, but it is wonderful!

Keep in mind that long term the Humalog/NPH regimen you are on may not work out real well. Some people have great luck with NPH, but many have given it the nickname of Not Particularly Helpful. If you notice whacky numbers that you can't seem to control, you may want to take a look at switching to Lantus or Levemir for 24 hour basal control and use Humalog to cover meals and/or snacks.

Four is a crazy age for diagnosis. My daughter was four when she was diagnosed and it was hard on her emotionally. She did a great job taking shots and checking but she was very angry and upset for a while.

Best of luck!

GREAT BIG HUG to you. We're newly diagnosed as well, and it's quite a ride. I dream of skyscrapers and plunging into deep murky water. But with the help of this board at 2 am, it's manageable. There's lots of support and brilliant advice.

HANG IN THERE. You can do it.
