Default low bs with NO symptoms

Having a bad morning here! Ben has been low a lot lately with NO symptoms. Ex: this morning he tested 46, (I triple checked) and was playing like a madman with his sister, didn't act hungry, etc...this has been happening lately, and it really scares me.
My question for all of you is...is it common for toddlers/preschoolers to have lows with no noticable symptoms? Ben is 4yrs, but functions on the level of a 3 year old, or so. He can't talk yet, at least not to really tell me whats going on, how he is feeling. He uses sign language, any other signers out there who can help with a system? We have an appointment in a couple of weeks, I'm going to talk to the endo about a cgm. We're working with his doses, and he's been sick lately, so that explains the lows;I can handle low glucose, I just want a warning!
Thankyou!!!!
Mary

I am so sorry to hear of your situation. My boys aren't as young as yours, but we have been dealing with random, unexplained lows, too (I was actually just going to start a thread to see if there were others and what everyone was doing about it).

No real answers, just a little sympathy and understanding here. I'm just pulling back on the amount of insulin all around for my 6 year old...

My now 3 year old doesn't feel lows. Only once has she actually been "stumbling disoriented" and that time the meter read LO. She has slept and played through 40s on a regular basis. Unfortunately at that age, if they feel different, they don't know how to express it - but they also might just not feel enough different to realize that it IS different. We just have to test more often - especially at times where there is any risk of low - extra playing, unusual meal, etc

My son is 4.5 and was diagnosed recently. He isn't showing signs at times. He's been 48 and 52 with no visible symptoms, yet yesterday he all of sudden got very cranky and irritable, turned pale, and he was only 65. I know there's an error rate with the meter, but still there doesn't seem to be anything predictable about this. I do think it's normal for a preschooler not to show signs, although I am quite worried how things will go at school when he is distracted and also possibly less comfortable showing signs during miild hypoglycemia. I don't have any advice on the sign language, but a friend of mine is an interpreter at a hs and works with a teenager who is deaf with T1 and CP. I could ask her for tips, although I'm sure it's a lot different given the age difference. If I find anythiing out I'll PM you. Good luck figuring things out.

I would think given your son's situation your endo would approve a CGMS. My DS is 8 and hasnt felt his lows in over 2 years. Last week we were finally given the ok for the CGMS from his endo.

Do you ask him how he is feeling when he tests low? I did that with my son and he will say "oh wait I feel kinda shakey" or whatever. I know your DS does sign but that might be a way to help him relize the feeling of being low and help him to inform you/school what ever when he is feeling that way. I also agree with the testing more often. You could just call your Endo team and ask about the CGMS now. Then at your appt you can get the final yes or no from them. That is what I have done and we got the yes within 2 days of me calling... Just a thought.
