Default A friend of mine is sooooooo uneducated!!

OK so I have to share this,
A friend of mine just found out she is pregnant and said her sister ended up having gestational Diabetes and after the baby was born she didn't "get rid of it." So my friend says to me "I am staying away from sugar, I don't want to end up having diabetes like my sister." So I explain the whole sugar doesn't cause diabetes etc etc etc. She tried to argue with me on it so I dropped the whole subject... Here is the real kicker.... She is a dietitian!!!! seriously if she doesn't know about nutrition she really shouldn't be a dietitian...

I am hoping she was just acting like she didn't have a brain and doesn't really believe sugar causes diabetes...

I have a feeling you are being very generous to hope she was just yanking your chain.

I think the general public (regardless of profession) lacks understanding about many conditions that they themselves do not have. Hek, my grandmother and several of my inlaws have diabetes but until Tom was diagnosed I had little clue. And forget celiac. I could go mute trying to explain that one. If one more person tells me, "He/she will outgrow it," I'm opening a can of whoop*** or two.

But for your friend to be a dietician? I know the dietician we talked to 16 years ago when Jenn was dx'ed w/celiac had far less idea what she was dealing with than I did. "Hidden gluten?" That woman had a hidden brain.

The dietician my daughter was sent to by her endocrinologist did not even know what gluten was, and told me that we had to avoid all sugars and simple carbs (try being celiac AND not eating rice and potatoes!).
Do you know how much schooling it takes to be a dietician?! up to 8 YEARS! It's ridiculous how little they actually know.

Our dietician said it didn't matter if Elizabeth avoided high GI foods or not. I'm not sure how true that is, in particular at breakfast time. My endo told me that I could probably teach them a thing or two.

My friend actually called me a few hours ago and told me that she knows she will be diabetic if she eats any sugars at all but it's ok to drink 64oz of juice a day I told her that juice is going to make her gain more weight she is only 3 months and already gained 15 pounds...
