The best way is to try different sized cups. Put some juice in different-sized cups and use that to see how much it raises BG at different times. I would have the juice ready in closeable cups (even those small baby bottles with the measurements) in the frigde door.

DS is 4, and one will raise his blood sugar 40 points. As others have said, though, it is a matter of trial and error. Fir us, one tab is generally enough for a slight low.

My daughter (almost 6 yrs) takes 4 to raise her usually. That or a 15g juice box do the trick. She can be slow to rise though and I rarely have issues with her going too high.

[QUOTE=coeen;811708]I also can't use 15 carb juice boxes with Nic. He goes up way to high. I found 8 carb juice boxes that I use. They have a Clifford dog on the front and more water in them. If I have to use a 15 carb box I drink half of it first. I also keep those little packs of Smarties in my purse that are 6 carbs a pack. They work great with him. Nic seems to go up 50- 70 points when I give him smarties or the 8 carb juice box. :

Tha's the other problem I drink half of them too, I don't even like em....hahahaha

Default try protein

I always make sure that i give nearly equal amount of protein if possible. Seems to slow down the rapid increase.

when a child is low you want the most rapid increase possible using dextrose/glucose. you don't want to slow it down. you should add the portein, fat or complex carb once the low has been treated.

In Pumping Insulin (by John Walsh) -
If weight is 50 lbs --- 1 gram will raise about 8mg
75 lbs --- 1 gram - 7mg

It's hard for me to get DD to stop mid-way through a juice box. To avoid overtreating, we try to use glucose tabs or skittles for a "minor" low. It takes a full juice box for quick drops or "major" lows. YDMV as to what a "minor or major" low equals.
