Default MRI = Special blood work due to type 1?

Seth dislocated his shoulder playing football. He was going to have an MRI next week but I just got a call saying that because he has type 1 he has to have blood work two weeks prior to the MRI. I am waiting for a call back but has anyone heard of this and know why?

If they're doing it with contrast they have to test to make sure he doesn't have any kidney disease because the contrast can be hard on the kidneys.

Otherwise, without contrast, there's no need for any extra anything.. I just had two MRI's done on Monday (knee and ankle), and there was nothing special required.

I was going to say they will check his kidney's because of the contrast.

How long ago was his yearly bloodwork? maybe the endo can sign off?

Can they do it without contrast?

yup, Kaylee had to have a kidney function test, and specifically one test they'll look at, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. She just had to have it within the last 12months.. if he happens to have a function test with his yearly blood work he should be OK.

the test also doenst take weeks to preform. My dad would have the test done and wait for the results the next day for tests he had to have contrast with. I think on one test, he had the kidney test done and the special contrast bone test done the same day.

The test is the GFR (Golmerular Filtration Rate). I've never heard of it being specifically done just for diabetics getting an MRI, I guess hospital protocol. And it shouldn't take more than a day to get results, I don't know why they are making you wait 2 weeks.

It really should be done in everyones case though, as if the kidneys aren't filtering properly then in severe cases the dye could lead to kidney failure.
