Default parents of toddlers and younger

Hi, my son is 22 months old. He's usually a good eater and eats a lot of fruits and veggies. Well now he's at the stage where he does not want to really eat anything because he's too busy playing. Any suggestions on how to encourage him to eat during his meal/snack times?

After my son was diagnosed at 16 months old, I made it the habit again, to sit down at the table as a family during meal times. I would set the table, like I remember my grandmother would do for every routine meal. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Placemats, plates, silverware, food in actual dishes (the whole nine yards).

If it was snack time same thing. I would give him 2 choices, then I would serve it at the table. Sometimes it was just the two of us, sometimes others in the family were around so they were included too. It was part of our routine as well as helped create a predictable schedule to be able to rely on.

I also read the book Sweet Kids and I found it incredibley helpful. As well as learning about all the different insulin's. my son could use to make diabetes fit better in our lifestyle.

Good Luck.

it kind of depends on the regimin your child is on and whether the have to eat because of insulin peaking or it they trend low.

do not follow him around with food and try to get him to eat. always provide food at the table at set times. set a timer for the amount of time he is to sit at the table. ex. 5 min for snack. have him sit for meals even if he chooses not to eat. most kids will learn to eat when food is offered. do not let him have unscheduled snacks because he did not eat the last meal. the feeling of hunger will teach him to eat when it is meal time. also, don't make a big deal about it. the more you force the issue and he knows that you really want him to eat, the less likely he will be to actually eat. so just offer the food, give choices, and when the timer is done, he is done with the meal. he will get another chance to eat at the next meal.

Sometimes kids arent hungry at meals because they just had a big snack, but get hungry before the next meal. It can be a viscious cycle. If you think this is what is happening you can try smaller snacks. Some kids just don't eat much. Most kids go through that stage Keep in mind one serving can be as little as 2 tbsp for a child that age. If you are having trouble with lows, adjust his insulin not his food. Z

Try to establish meal/snack routines, but don't sweat it too much. It will take time to establish. As long as he is getting a balanced diet don't worry too much at this age. Do what works for you and don't compare your son to other kids. As a mom of four boys, trust me, he'll eat everything he can get his hands on before long.
