So I'm going to nursing camp a state or two away in two weeks=) I'm flying alone... and I have a few questions=)
#1. can the dex go through the x ray thing you putyour bags through, or should I keep it with me like the pump? I asked about this on fb and I got one answer yes and one no, so I'm really confused=( #2. how often would you want your kid to text you (when on the ground) while traveling? My mom doesn't think about these things ahead of time but I don't want her to worry ![]() #3. To tell or not to tell? this past winter we went on vacation and we had to tell them I was wearing a pump on the way there because I couldn't go through the full body new fangled thing (pump set off the alarm)... then on the way back they didn't have one so I didn't mention it and it didn't set the alarm off=) So I'm wondering if I should tell them even if I don't have to? since I wont have anyone with me I worry that I'll have problems=( That's all! I'm a very experienced flyer, so in that sense I should be fine=) but any advice would be helpful=D

I generally proactively tell the security screener that I have diabetes and an insulin pump, but I also have syringes and liquids in my carry-on for the diabetes care.
I have been able to take full sized bottles of juice and water if they know it's for diabetes care... and then they don't do the whole "umm... ma'am, there aresome things in your bag that we need to look at more closely... is there anything we need to know?" thing... As far as the Dexcom, I've put it through in my bag every time I have flown with it, and never had an issue, but I'm not sure what the official Dexcom view is on that - you can always call them and ask... And the texting thing... umm, not a parent so can't answer that one...

It depends on my mood if I tell them about Jack's pump or not. It doesn't set off metal detectors, so if I don't tell them, they never know. I do always tell them about our supplies. They never care. We put the Guardian through the x-ray and it's fine.

If my pump is showing, and they ask, I tell them, most know, sometimes they doa pat dwon, sometimes they don't, personally, I think they're being pro active whem they do, ANYONE could wear what looks like a medical device. They're just doing their jobs to the best of their abilty.

Jordan leaves for a school trip Saturday. We've never said anything to TSA about her pump or Dexcom sensor and it's never set off the metal detector or been noticed. However, I told her when she travels alone, the best policy is just going to be to tell them upfront. So she doesn't get "caught" and have to get out of some kind of situation without her dad or me there. Just tell them and then deal with the pat down if required. We also made sure she knows her rights, such as keeping her pump attached and that she feels ok with standing up for herself if need be.
We put the Dex through the xray in her carry on. Before we leave the security area, we always confirm she's got her pump, the dex, and her diabetes bag. We know a boy who went on a school trip to Japan. They made him send his pump through X-ray and he left it there! He had to go back to MDI for the four years his pump was under warranty. I'd like three texts a day, morning, sometime during the day, and a night time bg. But mornings can get hectic with a school group and she already has extra things she has to do to get out of the hotel because of D. So honestly, I will settle for a bg number every night. And that's always non-negotiable. If she forgets or falls asleep, her advisors will be getting a phone call. Have a good trip.

With the texting thing, I think it really depends both on your mother and on what sort of trip this is. When I went on a trip with school, my mum wasn't too bothered about how often I called because she knew she would hear from my school if there were any issues. When I've been away alone, she likes to hear more often. I'd just ask her what would make her most comfortable.
