Default New member of the 'club'

My 6 year old son Andrew was diagnosed two weeks ago with Type 1. We are adjusting well to our new normal. Most of you know exactly what we are going through. I have found a few answers to questions I had by lurking around and felt it was time to join and give a generic thank you.

I feel a little bit lucky to have lived with a diabetic roommate in school. It certainly helped in the diagnosis as I managed to get Andrew to the hospital before he had any ketones in his urine. His blood sugar was over 40. It was the frequent urination and constant thirst that triggered me into buying some urine strips at the pharmacy and finding that he had lots of sugar present.

We are currently using manual injection 3 times daily and 2 types of insulin NPH and Rapid. I feel I have been drinking from the firehose in trying to gain all the knowledge I need to have. I do have questions that pop up every now and then and would find it comforting to know I can post them here where there are so many people with similar issues. It seems the more I learn about what we are using to manage the disease the more alternatives I find and questions I have.

I didn't mean for my introduction to be so long. Hopefully we will see a cure in our lifetime.

Dave.

Welcome to "the club" Dave...it's actually a club where we hate to see new members...but the fact that you have found this forum so quickly is great!!

There are people here full of knowledge, and we all know where you are and how you are feeling.

My daughter Meaghan is 4, was diagnosed at 2, 10 days before Christmas. We have been pumping a little over a year, and love it!!

Hope to get to know you better!

Hi Dave, we like to think of ourselves as a family so welcome to the family but sorry you had to join us. There is a lot to learn about diabetes but have lots of patience with yourself and please feel free to come in here and ask away. Cant guarantee that we will always have the answers but many heads are better then one. How is Andrew doing so far? We also started on NPH and humolog but use lantus and humolog now, it makes life a bit easier I think. And yes Dave, there will be a cure for diabetes during our childrens life time. I feel it

Sorry you have to be here, but I'm glad you found us so soon. CWD really does provide a lot of great information, but don't overwhelm yourself too soon. The first few weeks are very hard even without overloading yourself with information; there's plenty of time for you to learn everything about diabetes.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have (that's what we're here for! ).

I, too, hope for a cure in our lifetime.

Just wanted to let you know that the US use a different measurement of blood glucose than the UK and Canada. We use mmol/l and they use mg/dl in the US. To convert from mmol/l to mg/dl you just multiply by 18, so a BG of 10mmol/l would be 180mg/dl. So that's why you might see some different numbers around here than you are used to.

Glad you found us. I love your analogy of drinking from a firehouse. Quite appropriate.
