Default Who here unhooks while running/doing sports?

And then do you have highs several hours after?

I don't know how to do a poll, but I am just wondering for those who unhook their pumps during exercise of about 1/2 hour, do you have highs several hours later due to unhooking? The key point here is just 1/2 hour ish of exercise and unhooking, not hours of being unhooked.

I think depending on the activity that would be fine. My kids leave their pump on and do a temp basal of -40 % or so. They have done 30 min - 1 hour with it totally turned off. Any longer and extreme activity will cause ketones. We had that happen once with the pump turned off too long and soccer with a lot of running. That short of period should be fine.

We often will turn off pump a half hour when they are on the edge of low to help bring them up.

We usually run a temp basal. For us we start it 30 minutes prior, reduce 30% and run it through the duration of practice, plus 30 minutes after. Generally, we do not see a huge climb in numbers. If we did unhook for the 30 minutes, depending on the level of the activity, plus the temperature, we would either see a significant drop (hot) or a climb a few hours later (cool).

I unhook my pump for 30 minute runs. My BG usually drops after rather than rising. If my runs ever exceed an hour, I will probably have to start wearing the pump for them.

We're on the Pod and for a 2 hour volleyball practice or soccer practice, we turn off the basal with no ill effect. In fact, with the vb (but not the soccer), we have to do a reduced overnight basal for hours later on top of turning it off during practice to avoid overnight lows. YDMV

Do you need to have carbs with no insulin during your 30 min run as well? I know ydmv but just wanting ideas on where to start.

We've been trying to figure this very issue out over the last two weeks. What we found worked for us Friday was a temp basal at -40% with a 10 carb snack right before she started playing. Her games, softball, last about 1 1/2 hours so we don't unhook, but finding the right reduction rate/carb snack that will keep her from bottoming out halfway through, and struggling to stay up afterwards has been tricky.

For just 1/2 hour, I'd be okay disconnecting... but that's really my limit. More than about an hour and because I'm on Apidra I'll be dealing with large ketones from lack of insulin.

My experience with activity longer than an hour - my BG drops initially, but then begins to steadily rise. It's almost impossible to find a match of "reduced basal" that stops that first drop, but doesn't make me skyrocket later.

We would be fine with unhooking for a half an hour during exertion.

My son unhooks for football, much longer than half an hour actually, and does great. Usually he drops a bit but not enough to worry about.

No highs later at all. Only issue we see with highs during exercise is when it's related to adrenalin (usually during games and/or hitting practice) and that comes down naturally for him.
