Oh, thanks so much! First time I read that straight, then I read it again and thought you were admonishing me and I couldn't have been more dejected! So glad I misunderstood. Good luck with all.

Phony? Is there something hinky about this? My brother is about as straight-laced as they come, and he got advice from an agent, I assumed this was fine. Did you think I was encouraging you to commit fraud? And here I was so puffed up, thinking I was being helpful. . . won't bother you again.

Yep, it's possible. Aetna for example lets you purchase insurance directly
from them as an individual or family:

      https://www.aetna.com/iqs/aimquote.do

With SIL's health problems, we couldn't get stand along insurance for the
family. I'm assuming people are saying the same thing (i.e. due to the
pre-existing condition of diabetes, they can't get insurance either).

We were told by an insurance broker how to do it however. We formed a
partnership (me and Becky) and call ourselves a company. We then applied to
Aetna as a small business. The requirement is that you have to have a
minimum of 2 people enrolled in the plan. So our insurance costs doubled.
I am on it as a single person, Becky and K are on it as a family. We pay
about $800 a month right now total, to Aetna. (We don't really pay it, Jim
and the company do). We could've signed up on XXX's plan, but they didn't
have the right insurance plan for SIL's doctors.

You have to file all the right tax forms at the end of the year (we just
show a zero income of course) and provide those yearly to the insurance
company. There are cheaper plans, think we could've gotten away with $500 /
month with much bigger deductibles, etc.

However, I don't know how this works with pre-existing conditions. Becky
was denied due to the pre-existing condition on her own, but not as part of
the "company". It's definitely a look before you leap scenario.

I'd much rather the insurance guys just say "pay us twice as much and we'll
insure you" (which is what it essentially is), but nope...has to be
      complicated :)

Hope that helps Lisa...let me know if you want more info....
      Love,
      XXX

Figure you don't want to see my name again, but when I chickened out and tried to go anonymous I couldn't find a way! Saw on your blog that you wanted to start a business and had insurance questions. My SIL had breast cancer, so when my brother wanted to go that way he figured out a solution. Don't know if it would work for you, but I'm posting in the next message his answer to me when I queried him, maybe it's one piece of the puzzle. No need for reply, use it if you can, ignore it if you can't!

Hey. I didn't want to bump the dad thread since it dissolved into something awful, but I did want to say thanks for the comment about Samantha's picture in my signature. I just found my camera from when we moved and I still has our pictures on there from our last trip to visit the in laws down South. It was like Christmas seeing all of these pictures that I had forgotten I took to begin with!

      Hi
I read on your blog about Emma, maybe missing mom when whe goes away with brendan and grampa.

One thing that might helps, that has worked here is getting your wife to go to dollar store. There she get a gift for each day and have her write a little note to Emma, maybe even include a picture of just her and mom too .

      it worked great for us
