Connor was dx'd a little over a month ago and is starting to express feelings of in a sense being embarrassed about having Diabetes. When we're out somewhere, when he has to check his blood sugar or give himself a shot, he'll go to the bathroom and do it so no one will see. The nurse at school says he does the same thing there too. I asked him why and he said he's tired of people feeling sorry for him. :( I understand that he is different from the other kids and at his age, fitting in is all most kids want to do but I don't want him to feel ashamed of having Diabetes to the point where he feels like he has to hide it. I wish there was something I could do. :(

I've been fairly active (helping with something at school - running around after a load of 10 year olds is pretty good exercise!) all day. My BGs were fine. When I got on the bus home (3PM) my BG was 150. At 4.30PM I tested at 284. I took 1.2 units. At 6PM I was 299, and when I looked at the tube it was snapped at the connection to the reservoir (not completely snapped, but partially) so I changed the tubing and I took 4 units (added a bit extra to that because I knew I needed to come down fast). At 7PM I was 274 and had enough IOB that I didn't take another correction. It's now 8PM and I'm 301.

If the tubing was snapped and the insulin wasn't getting through, would that cause prolonged highs even after the tubing was replaced? I guess if I was missing basal, I might need higher correction boluses to compensate. I've just been high for way too long and I'm not sure what to do next. I'm not even particularly high, but it's really hard to think as clearly as usual.

This is day 3 on the Accu-Chek Combo pump and we love it so far but are still learning the ropes.

(Jack has an ISf of .4/10g.)

Say Jack eats 10g of rice and I give him .4 units to cover.

If 10 minutes later Jack eats 5g apple do I give him .2 to cover that as well?

That's what I have been doing, but sometimes the meter/remote/bolus calculator tells me how much active insulin is in his body and recommends that I subtract from the bolus...then again sometimes it doesn't...????:o:o

Am I doing this right?

We were at the endo 2 weeks ago and Kobe's A1C was 6.5. I thought that was great but the endo scolded us for lows. I looked at his numbers when I got home and I've been monitoring them over the last 2 weeks. What I noticed is that he has one low number almost every day- usually in the 60's. I was wondering from all of you if a low once per day is normal, bad, good? I'm not sure. He's very active and is constantly running and playing so sometimes his numbers seem to drop out of nowhere. I am just wondering if I should be trying to keep more carbs in him to keep his numbers up or if one "minor low" each day is not a big deal.

Appointment was fine although A1C was higher than I'd like (but expected.)

Since Tuesday we're now battling lows that seem to come out of nowhere. I've been reducing basals and I:C ratios - still lows.

Maybe her pancreas got inspired at the clinic the other day??? :D:p

I am reading the other thread and feeling much better. I met one of those competitive parents the other day. He asked what Hanna's A1c was, I was caught off guard and told him it was 7 at her last visit. He says "hmph, could be better, his (meaning his son same age as Hanna) is 6.2."

When I picked my jaw up off the floor I replied that I didn't see it as a contest and that I think Hanna and I are doing a great job considering her age and the start of puberty. It went on back and forth for a bit, I tried very hard to be polite but I was pretty shocked anyone would speak to me like that. This is a child who is new to my daughter's school and in her grade making it 4 kids with diabetes in her grade, we met at a conference at our drs office. I was very glad Hanna was not there. His son seemed like a really nice kid in spite of it though.

my daughter got started on saline today.we had a battle with the infusion sets.we have got animas ping for her.
inset 30 gave her a very big bruise on her bum and lot of blood in the set.then we moved on to contact detach which was our choice already for her as she has absolutely no fat anywhere.i am just worried that with the adhesive rashes etc she wll be left only with very small space for the change of infusion set.
what cream do you all use to make the the sites/bums heal better and keep soft and supple.
i am just anxious about everything.keeping something 24/7 attached to a 4 year old is making me nervous.please share your thoughts and your experiences and also i wanted to ask 4-5 year old's parents that what i/c etc they have given by NP.my daughter will be beginning with .15 units basal and 1:60 gms carb ratio and correction BG will be 300 mg/dl. This all is to start with then we will monitor her closely..her insulin is starting on 25th.hope everything will be much better then.

Erik is having one day of good numbers and all went to h#$#. Went to get him in his jammies so that we can watch Shrek 3 on tv and found the cleo dangling down his pant leg. Site is intact is just came detached. Erik doesn't know how it happened or when it happened. Checked him and he is 401 and says he has 1.75 on board. I drew up 2 units and gave it to him. My suspicion is that it came detached before dinner. Now, I have to see which way the numbers will go. Oh, insulin god bring us some good #'s.

Bear with me - this could get long.

DS had been on 6.75 units of Lantus in the morning (2 years old, 38lbs). Novolog I:C breakfast - 1:20
Novolog I:C lunch - 1:20
Novolog I:C dinner - .5:20

We had decent control during the day, but he would run in the 200 and 300 over night and then finally got back in target around lunchtime, but I had to REALLY limit his mid-morning snack. I called our CDE and she said to transition his Lantus to 6 units at dinner time.

Over night last night, he ran low - to the point that I had to wake him up to give him a snack. Now he's running high during the day. I have changed his dinner Novolog to 1:20, as he was running in the 200s at bedtime. Tonight at dinner he was at 362. I have been giving him VERY limited between meal snacks (Maybe 8 carbs -that we aren't supposed to cover)

Tonight I gave him 5.5 units of Lantus so that he might not run so low over night, but I feel like I am setting him up to be in the 400s at dinner tomorrow night.

It seems like we can't find a dose of Lantus that doesn't make him run low initially, then high after it's been in his system around 15-18 hours.

Any advice? I am at my wit's end. I am calling his endo to order the pump on Monday (they want him on it and we have already done a trial with the Ping) It seems like I am not going to get any consistent control until he is constantly getting insulin.

TIA
