After hearing horror stories and seeing some really unfavorable comments on the BBB website, I was pleasantly surprised with our first experience. I went online to our UHC account and saw that everyone of my daughters scrips transferred properly from Medco. I clicked on the ones I wanted, got the price and had the order processed. I placed the order 5/9 and it was shipped 5/14, and received today. All items came in one box which was nice (Medco always broke up shipments) and the insulin came in a cooler with a more than ample supply of ice packs.

So I have to say that my first experience with them was excellent. I hope everyone else has such an easy time refilling scrips.

As many of you know from my posts I suffer greatly with glucose level sensitivity. I have been on a low dose of Anxiety pills for nearly six weeks and they ain't doing nothing. The more research I do about my specific situation the more empty handed I come up. It just seems so bizarre that I have the same disease as millions of other people yet I seem to be the only one in existence that has such horrible symptoms from it. Mainly the elevated levels. I cut out carbs for breakfast more or less to avoid some inconsistent spiking in the morning but every-time I check my pre_meal sugar and I am over about 90 I just don't feel well. After lunch today I was feeling the typical irritable I get from elevated levels and right before diner I was 133. I should feel fine at that level (so they say) but I didn't. There are a variety of symptoms that come into play and most of them don't seem to be anything like what others experience even at much higher levels. I really just don't know where to take this? Anyone here know an Endo that may have a clue and a solution?

I have been using Humalin R the past few weeks in my pump and it has been working really well. In fact, better then apidra or humalog/novalog have ever worked for me.

Anyway, all forms of regular insulin are apparently "tier 3" for our prescription coverage which is a really high copay (it is actually cheaper to just buy without insurance from target). It looks like I can get Relion R from Walmart and it is made by the same manufacturer as the normal Novalin R.

Would you try it? I figure the worst thing that happens is it doesn't work as well and I am high or low for a few days.

Thanks :cwds:

Found this today -- thought it was interesting:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23632200

Characterization of the use of liraglutide for glycemic control in healthy and Type 1 diabetes mellitus suffering dogs

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a glucose-lowering, intestinal-derived factor with multiple physiological effects, making it attractive for diabetes therapy. However, the therapeutic potential of endogenous GLP-1 is limited, because of rapid inactivation by dipeptidyl peptidase-4. Recently, enhanced incretin preparations, such as liraglutide, have emerged, which are more resistant to degradation and longer lasting. Liraglutide is a long-acting acylated human GLP-1 receptor agonist, with a 97% amino acid sequence identity to endogenous human GLP-1, and 100% amino acid sequence homology with canine GLP-1. Since liraglutide has yet to be examined for use in dogs, and the incretin effect has been reported to exist in dogs, we sought to initially characterize liraglutide's ability for glycemic control in healthy dogs, under an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) environment initially. This was followed up a more realistic scenario involving food with insulin injection +/- liraglutide injection resulting in a glucose curve based study involving dogs suffering from Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Overall, liraglutide had a stabilizing effect on glucose levels, maintaining circulating levels between 77.0 and 137.0mg/ml throughout the OGTT test period, resulting in a significant reduction of 13.8% in glucose AUC0-120min (total area under the curve for 0-120min) as compared to baseline control in healthy dogs (n=5). Interestingly, the liraglutide associated reduction in circulating glucose was not accompanied by any significant increase in insulin. Moreover, T1DM dogs (n=4) responded favorably to liraglutide treatment, which lead to a significant reduction of 46.0% in glucose AUC0-12h (total area under the curve for 0-12h), and a significant reduction of 66.5% in serum glucose as compared to baseline controls (insulin treatment only). Therefore, liraglutide's prandial glucagon suppressive ability appears to play a key role in its glucose-lowering capability, and offers great potential for use with dogs suffering from T1DM.

Hi guys, we are still new to the diabetes world.

First question is should your ketones be at 0? Or is it normal for it to sit at 0.1 or 0.2 (I'm from Australia so I think the numbers are different).

Everywhere I was reading was that there shouldn't be ketones, I tested my identical twin daughter (the non diabetic one) and her sugars sat at around 10 and her ketones were at 0.2 (I'm sure nothing to stress about). So out of curiosity I tested mine last night to see if they would be 0 and they were 0.6, my sugars were at 7 (I'm not a diabetic) I had a glass of water and the niggling headache I had all day started thumping, I retested an hr later an it was 1.7. I had eaten pasta for dinner a few hrs before and had a cuppa and a few cookies before I tested so it wasn't from not eating.

So my second question is what would cause ketones in a non diabetic who isn't dieting?

Thanks for your help :-)

Posted on April 23, 2013 by FDA Voice
By: Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D.

Get Informed. Get Involved. Help FDA Help Patients Have a Bigger Voice. That?s the slogan of a new FDA web site that I?m excited to announce today. The FDA Patient Network has been designed from the ground up to focus entirely on patients.

FDA has long been developing ways to increase patients? interest and participation in the agency?s work, and in the policies and decisions that affect them.

Since the early 1990s, FDA has been working directly with patients and patient advocates to help them learn more about how medical products are developed and regulated. Patient representatives participate in FDA advisory meetings, and contribute the important perspective of their patient community. When patients better understand the intricacies of how medical products are studied, reviewed, assessed and brought to market, their input will be that much more focused and valuable. We hope, with the launch of this new web site, to expand the role of patients beyond the select group of patient representatives and to engage a wider audience of patients in new and broader ways.

The FDA Patient Network web site is an interactive tool for educating patients, patient advocates, and consumers on how their medications ? both prescription and over-the-counter ??and medical devices move from the realm of idea to the realm of the marketplace. It brings together, in one place, information that is important to patients, making it easier for them to find what they are looking for and to understand the significance of their findings.

This web site will open new channels of communication with the public, such as live chats with senior agency officials. It will help patients and consumers better understand the process for determining whether medical products are safe and effective and encourage them to contribute their ideas and concerns about the development and regulation of these products.

I am excited because this new Patient Network web site provides a new model for FDA to follow in making its inner workings transparent to the public. It ushers in a new era of access and input for patients and consumers that will evolve with the needs of both communities. I encourage you to explore the new site at PatientNetwork.FDA.gov.

Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., is Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration

I am having a new problem after long runs (let's define long run as 15+ miles). I typically put a 50% temp basal on for the 2 hours before a run, then just do a basal of .05 during the run. I usually start a run at 130 go up to 160 and then end around 130-140. I eat 8 carbs every 15 minutes and check the sensor bg every 10 minutes (the app I use says the time every 5 minutes). Lately, my blood sugar during the run has been the same as usual but 10-20 minutes after I stop running I have been dropping to 30 and needing 40-60 carbs (and 20 units of glucagon today ) in order to get above 70. I only eat 80 or so carbs a day so that is a lot of carbs for me!

I am in the process of training for a marathon so I would like to figure this out. My family is going to consult a CDE who has experience with athletes. But what is going on here? I have run 6 half-marathons with no problems. Is my body just incapable of running more then 15 miles? I have been reading a lot of running with diabetes blogs and no one else seems to have had an issue like this suddenly pop up. And the method I use right now has worked for more then 5 years. The only thing that has changed is I switched to humalog from apidra-- but I adjusted my basals for that.

Does anyone have any ideas here? Would you completely cut off basal during the run? I would have ketones by the end but is that really all that bad?

Thanks for any and all advice :cwds:
