Well, there are pluses and minuses about having a pump. The greatest thing of course is eating whatever and whenever you want. You can also sleep and stay up later. Also, only 1 shot every 3 days!
The minuses are, sports are a bit tougher, and the pump could react to some things.
I myself have a Medtronic, and have had it since August.

Yes, you can disconnect it for sports, showers, baths, swimming etc.
The insertion of the site doesn't hurt more than a shot, but I still use LMX4 cream to numb the site first - I have been doing it since I was 7 years old. :D
It isn't painful at all, but you need to get used to having it attached to you 24/7. I wear it in a pouch most of the time or in my pocket. It is completely safe.
I used to have the MiniMed Paradigm, now I have the Cozmo. They're both good. Not a lot of difference between the pumps once you are using them.
Enjoy it!

Hi! My name is Miranda, I'm 26 years old but I do have a pump! I've had it for about 4 years now and I absolutely LOVE It! I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 10 and wish I had gotten the pump sooner. It has changed my life so much! With the pump there are no limitations on what you can or can't eat, my dr says I can eat whatever I want I just take more insulin. It is so small and looks like a pager so it's not noticeble at all. I LOVE IT and highly recommend it! My pump is a paradigm by the way...and it's purple!!
hey Miranda i've been diabetic for 4 years now and i use shots they r so uncomfortable and annoying and im seriously thinking of putting the pump but im too scared and worried i dont care about the pain anymore im used to it im just scared that it might be uncomfortable and annoying too and worried that somebody may find out that im wearing it and they will ask me those stupid questions and i just cant take it anymore :mad:i wish i can shoot them all and rest !! :D
I hate it/love it. It sometimes hurts when the insulin goes in, and when I have to change the set. We got emla cream witch numbs it, and that helps
i just wanna know can u take it off???????????????????????????????:confu sed::confused:

Hi Raya,
Im Van and I do untethered (which means he does lantus and the pump - MUM) so I have my pump off all day. I put it back on to eat or correct if I'm high. I only get a site change every 4 days and when mum gives me lantus in the morning she injects it in to the site tail (he wears a contact D site so it has a small tail for disconnecting away from the body - MUM). I think this is much better than how we did it (Daily injections and tried pumping - MUM) I can eat when ever I want and don't sleep with it on (BTW - his numbers are great and his A1c has gone down in to the 6's - MUM). Nobody else I know does this way but I think it's cool.
Ivan

Raya, if you want to know any more about this there is some info on this method if you word search it, or you can send me a private message if you (or your folks) want to talk to me about it. Cheers, Ivan's Mum (francesca)
i never thought that there is such a weird way to get insulin i dont think anybody i know does it either but as long as it works then thats great i mean i would do anything to eat anything that i want or when i ever i want.. plus it doesnt matter how u get it, what matters is that u feel comfortable and healthy :) and thanks for the info

That's cool - I know that when kids get older they don't want to advertise their diabetes, my son is only 6 and doesn't like people asking questions all the time. This works well for him and it's all about what you, the person with D feels most comfortable about doing to keep them healthy. Best of luck what ever you decide to do. I gotta say that taking Ivan out, reading the back of an iceblock packet and saying 'go for it you can eat it - we've got your pump' was just wonderful. It's made life so much easier for all of us. Anyhow, just so you know, there is a 'middle ground' between MDI and pumping that works just as well as pumping. - Cheers, Ivan's Mum.

Raya,
I've been pumping with Cozmo for a month in a half. There's a site that is attached to you either on your belly or bottom, where ever comfortable for you. You put on a tube that runs to the pump for insulin to go into you. When it's time to take a shower, you just take the tube off, and the site stays in you. I just leave my pump on my dresser until I'm ready to put it back on once I'm dressed.
I remember before I started I was nervous about it hurting. A lot of people said I would get used to it like the shots. I did get used to it, and now it doesn't hurt. You might want to be careful where the tubing is sticking out because you can get it caught on something, or like me, your baby sister will grab at it.
My school nurse says it's a lot easier to use the pump instead of shots because she doesn't have to get up. When I'm with my grandma, she thinks its easier too because she would get nervous with the shots.
I hate when people ask me about my diabetes too. My class and my teacher ask me things all the time and that bugs me. I think when I'm out I get less questions because I can just pull the pump out and plug in the insulin. People don't really notice it, they probably think it's a cell phone or something. With the shots, it was hard because you had a needle and you had to draw the insulin and then get a shot.
Good luck with your decision.

i know how u feel about the shots they actually hurt sometimes and i always think before i inject myself where im going to inject my self today on my thight or belly, the right side or the left side it is so confusing and annoying... but i have to live with it i guess mum said that i might put the pump in the summer and im so excited about the idea !!:D
OMG ur sister grabed it :eek:thats must be really painful!!
and TX 4 the info :)

Hi Raya,
I think my son gets asked about testing way more often than his pump. He wears it in full view on his waistband but at a glance it pretty much looks like a phone or pager. When he's taking insulin it doesn't look much different from someone checking their text messages, except for the tubing.
You can disconnect for up to an hour for sports or swimming or a bath without worrying too much about it.
Getting it pulled out doesn't hurt as much as you'd think -- it's not a needle pulling out, just a small plastic tube. Mostly it's the tape ripping off, like a bandaid. Aaron got his pump hit by a dodgeball once and it went flying across the room, ripped his site right out!
Wow i really thought the pump might be painful like the needle but i guess its ok and its good to know that people will think that ur putting cell phone not a pump that makes me really relieved i was really worried that if i put the pump people will start asking me questions but i dont think so anymore.. it was really good to know that !!:)
thanks again hollyb:D

The Animas pumps rock. Zebs blood sugar and A1C have been under so much control. I think you should get a pump. They work so well!!!:D:D:D
i really hope that i will get the pump !
