Margaret O - after reading about your son and then having discussions with my son, he has decided to take a short break from the pump over Christmas break here. His quarterly endo appointment was today. He'll be back on the pump soon enough, but I think the little break will do him good here at home. He's already just enjoying even just putting his hands in his pockets and not having the pump always there or having to be careful 24/7 that the tubing is pulled out on a kitchen drawer knob, etc... Just a little freedom for a time.
So thanks for being open and honest about your situation - as it has helped us with our journey. :cwds::cwds:

I'm so glad it is working. I am anxious for our son to try being un-tethered, even for a month. He gets home next week and our endo should give him the go-ahead to go back to shots for a while. Just to get a break and not roll over it when sleeping, dropping it on the floor, taking it off and putting it on during work outs. I know the pump is a wonderful, wonderful thing, but getting a break every once in a while has its benefits too. Celebrate the small stuff!!:cwds::cwds:

The shots are going okay so far. Our son started on Lantus Thursday and so far his BG's are pretty good. He used his CGMS system, kept it by him during the night and the steadiness of the Lantus was great to see on a graph almost real time. He started at 17 units then went to 18 but now is back to 17 after running too many numbers in the 80 range. At 17 he seemed to run higher BG's about 160 range in the afternoon. So he's still fine tuning and adjusting. He decided to do all his shots in his arms, tried his thin thighs but too painful. He isn't using the ab's at all, total break from there for a month. He said today he likes not having to carry as much stuff around. He is liking the untethered feel and I find his blood sugars reliable enough and steady enough I don't worry about him.(I was a bit fried after the NPH experience for 6 months when he was Dx in 2002). His insulin range should be between 15-18 u of L based on his lowest basal rate times 24.

Very cool it's working out, Siren, for your son. Our son is going back on the pump today. So his was a very short break. We just got some sample pens and they're done. I told my son we could get prescriptions no problem if he wanted. He really did enjoy the respite - especially the rolling around while sleeping without fear of tangling up tubing. :D One day he went snow boarding all day and really liked not being attached to the pump. It's great to have options - now back to Mr. Medtronic!!!

I was actually wondering about going on and off the pump for short bursts of time. I suppose if he wanted to go on the pump for a few days then off for a day or two with L this could be a whole new way of making D easier to live with. Flexibility.
The only problem with that is that Lantus stays in the system for 3 or 4 days, according to our endo, so the Basals would have to be lowered when he went back on.

thanks. I'll probably(he will) call his endo before switching back to the pump. This is suppose to be a one month break but he seems to like it so far. Might stay off the pump a little longer when he goes back to college in January.
