The las two weeks have been very strange. Lows and highs with no real explanation.

Probably five or six of the last ten days now my son (15) has been over 200 in the morning, with trace to small ketones.

BUT, he's also had strange lows on a couple of those days. Yesterday, he was 259 with small ketones, but he didn't take any sliding scale (thankfully!). By 2pm he was 60... and that was after he ate half a cookie and a piece of sushi in the grocery store. We had a normal breakfast, but hadn't had lunch yet.

Last night, he was 149 at betime with no ketones. He ate TWO pb crackers (about 7 carbs) at 11pm. This morning he's 201 and has small ketones again. ????

Here's another weird one... 178 at betime, no snack, and *323* in the morning!

He's had a sinus infection, but it appears to be gone. He's been on antibiotics for 10 days and has another 10 days to go.

Ideas? I haven't called the endo because he has his quarterly appt on Wednesday. But now I'm wondering if I should, since he keeps spilling ketones. He's actually healthier today than he has been in the last months (fighting another sinus inf). Initially we were thinking he needs to increase his lantus, but I won't do that without talking to the endo since he's also had the really weird lows (not related to basketball).

eta: After reading the thread asking how often our kids are in range... YIKES! My son hasn't had a day without a number over 200 SINCE OCTOBER 13TH!!! His range is 80-200 and he feels lows sometimes even when he's in the 80s, so he will have a snack if he't there. I think my head has been in the clouds... How did I miss this?

Strange indeed. Let's see if we can puzzle some things out.

Not sure how he's getting his insulin, but BG is going up overnight so maybe his basal insulin dosage needs to go up.

The low during the day yesterday came from missing lunch.

As for the ketones, question for you: has your son been eating less because his BG has been running high? If so, then the ketones could be starvation ketones, where the body burns fat to make up for missing carbs.

Lots to think and talk about with the endo!

it might be the antibiotics sometimes they change sugar levels and insulin consumption

That was my initial thought. Until he started going low midafternoon on non-basketball practice days.

There's a good laugh for the day. :p He's 15. A typical 15, so that would "no" he's not eating less. The boy is a non-stop eating machine. Yesterday was weird because our daughters had a Nutcracker performance and we were waiting for them to finish and then go out to lunch.

Please keep the suggestions rolling! I have to go into town for a while, but I will be checking here as soon as I get back.

I talked with him a bit this morning. We're both pretty sure that he's been good about counting the carbs, but given the situation he agrees not to eat anything that we don't absolutely for sure know the carb count. That way we can rule out mistakes in counting with certainty.

 Didn't know that. I'll talk with the pharmacist when I pick up his refill this afternoon.
Thanks!
