...things fall in place unexpectedly and when we fear the worst, we sometimes...just sometimes make out the best....

Case in point, we had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory today with my inlaws who are here visiting for two weeks. Mia ate:

3 slices of bread (french/pumpernickel)
a "kids brunch" -I had no idea what that would look like
and of course, the kids wanted cheesecake for dessert, which was a promise...

So I guessed the carbs of the bread.
And guessed the carbs of the 2 1/2 HUGE slices of french toast, the real syrup and the bowl of strawberries.
And guessed some more on that cheesecake, 1/3 of the slice.

All in all, my guesstimate arrived at over 125 carbs (!!) and a combination of normal and combination boluses. Over 5 units of insulin! Double ! Starting BG was nicely in range but boy this meal was an experiment!!

Somehow, we forgot to check her BG as we were wrapping teacher's gifts after we got home. She felt good and looked good. I finally remember after 3 hours: BG 162! Let another hour go: BG 106. :)

WOW. Thank you, Diabetes Angels!!

Aaaargh and just when I am done celebrating our BG luck, I get a 306 reading right before bedtime LOL!!! Go figure!!! Dinner wasn't too long ago, let's see what a conservative correction will do....

There's nothing like the experience of facing a big blow out mega carb meal or party, doing the math, taking a deep breath, giving a huge bolus.. and seeing it all pan out perfectly. Congratulations!

Good job!

Cheesecake is something I have not figured out yet. The last time we were at the cheesecake factory, we carefully weighed and figured out the carbs and added in fat and protein. Things went well till 6-8 hours later (during the night) and she skyrocketed to the 400's! This happens EVERY time we try cheesecake. I need to sit down and try to figure it out again. If I front load more insulin with the combo, she goes low. And correcting a fat-induced high in the 400's requires almost double the insulin here. It's very frustrating!

Hmm I wonder if thats what happened to us tonight. She has only had cheesecake twice as far as I can remember so we don't have a lot of history with it yet. I am sure we will venture there again soon LOL.
