Hi
My daughter starts on the MM522 pump in January.
We received her pump 2 weeks ago but her dietician will not let her start until January.
I thought that over the holidays would be a good time to start but the dietician disagreed!
The dietician is a tough cookie. I would love for us to go to her training very well prepared.
Any advice as to how we can prepare ourselves?!
She also got me nervous that maybe by January, Medtronic would be coming out with a newer pump! Anybody hear about that?
Thanks for your help.
Maura
Why is it up to the dietician? It seems like it would be your endo's call

I think that it should be your endo's call as well. But on the being prepared part. You can go to the minimed.com website and they have at the top of the site online school. Click on that and you can read and practice situations and have a lot of understanding about the pump.

Have you read Pumping Insulin yet? That is a great book...and will be very overwhelming and technical...but it will give you some great advice.
Good luck.

Thank you for replying
Her dietician is the one who makes all the decisions and gives the training.
I will look at the Medtronic website and read the book but what should I be looking for?
Is there anything specific she will be asking us? Any thing specific that we should know?

I know they do have a pump infront of the FDA but it could be a while before it gets approved. I wouldn't hold off. MM is good about upgrading if your pump is new. Our first pump got upgraded for free because a new pump came out shortly after we got ours.

Take your pump out of the box and start playing with it. JUST DON'T REWIND IT!!!!
Then head off to this website. We couldn't go through pump training until we completed this with the certificate...

It's free and it's informational!

Talk to your doc about what kind of set they prefer. We use the sure t's. The very tiny needle does stay in, but this ensures no kinks. They are the only ones we have ever used.

if you haven't yet, go to Minimed's website and do the online pump school.. that lets you go through the pump, gives you senerios.. lets you get farmiliar with what will go on.. it was something that was required for us to do before we could move onto the pump start..
I agree with the others it shouldn't be up to the diatician.. BUT for Kaylee's pump training it was the CDE that trained us.. just the way it works in their office and we had to wait a month or so,but not because she wanted us to but because she was booked up.. she only does pump starts on the first monday of the month..

When I got my MM722 it came with a CD that I was able to put in the computer. I was the same as the pump school but gives you a little more info.

I agree with the others -- do the online pump school!! It's great.
We had to be signed off on by the nutritionist, too. Although she didn't make the call, we couldn't proceed without her approval.
I can see both sides of starting/not starting over the holidays. It might be stressfull and interfere with the "fun" of the holiday, but then again, it might be totally wonderful to allow your child to graze on holiday goodies.
Can you talk to her and outline your reasons for wanting to start while you have the time off? We started both boys over the summer, and I was glad for not being in a school year. If you feel you can manage the added work of the pump (because it is a lot of work, especially at the beginning) and would rather do it over vacation time, I'd push for it.
