I gave her 5 units of Lantus, held the needle in for 10 seconds, and still a huge drop came back out. How could this happen? I gave an extra quarter unit near the injection site as a result. I hope this doesn't cause any problems, but I felt she didn't get all her Lantus. I was thinking about raising her dose anyways, so I figured a quarter unit extra wouldn't hurt.

I hate it when it happens with Lantus, cautious all day. With the Novolog you can watch and correct but with the Lantus, it's scary. I'll be thinking about you today

That used to happen to us a lot when Emma was on injections. I never knew what to expect for the day since I didn't know how much she really got... of course she was only getting 1-1.5 units, so a drop was a lot.

Hopefully the extra 1/4 unit you gave her will be just right! :)

this happens sometimes to us. I don't ever give extra lantus. We never see any difference in #'s. I wonder if it is not the lantus coming out but just some fluid. I don't like it when it happens (makes me nervous) but it hasn't affected anything yet. I'm sure she'll be fine..

Update: She's fine. The fasting numbers are not going up or down, so I think the basal is okay. I don't think a quarter unit would have much affect on her because she's already taking 5 units.

I was thinking of raising the basal a half a unit for the last few days but since I had some issues with high fat content last night, and I accidentally gave a unit too much Novolog at lunchtime yesterday so I corrected with carbs and she rebounded, yesterday was just a messed up day in terms of tracking BG numbers and carbs, so I held off. Those things really cloud the fact that she may need lower carb ratios.

She has been waking up a little higher than her fasting bedtime numbers lately and rising in the middle of the night, but that's only been for the last couple of days, and I believe yesterday it was from the high fat/combination rebounding, and the day before, from carb ratios that are too high at bedtime and dinner (they can sometimes make for higher morning numbers). If she wakes up higher in the following three days, then I will change the basal, especially if she has had no misdoses of Novolog, rebounding, or high fat.

Just three days ago, all her prior morning numbers were within 10 to 20 points of her fasting bedtime numbers. Therefore, I'm ambivalent changing the basal. The basal is usually one of the last things I change because if you goof that up, it's hard to deal with during the day, especially with a 24 hour cycle that Lantus has. You can always correct the fast acting, but the basal, if set incorrectly, can be a nightmare. Even when the endo wants to change the basal, I really question it if it doesn't seem logical.
